The Rusty Barrell is THE place for steak in Ponca City, OK. The "Supper Club" vibe is reflected in the way you enter the restaurant which is in the alley way on the back side of a shopping center and movie theater. They keep the windowless door locked and you must "buzz" in. Once you're in, you're greeted by the mouth-watering aroma of open flame grilled meats and your mouth will begin to water. You can actually watch them grill your steak, chicken, or fish since the grill is in the middle of the lower dining room. I say lower because there is also an upstairs where most of the seating is and also the small cozy bar. If you can't climb steep stairs, upstairs may not be your place. There is also an anex for lager parties which doesn't quite have the atmosphere as the other two dining areas. There are no windows and the light is turned down low with candles at each table. Very intimate. We usually get the T-bone. I also get the marinated mushrooms. I have been there many many times and can only remember one time that my steak was not up to their usual standards, but that was before the current owner purchased the restaurant. They do use what I describe as a worchestershire-based marinade which they brush on while grilling. We love it. Some prefer they hold the marinate which they will gladly do for you if you request so. They bring a small freshly baked loaf of bread to your table which is good, but nothing special. You put together your own salad on chilled metal plates at the salad bar which is fairly small, but is also very good. They have some wonderful dressings. They also offer buffalo steaks one night a week, but I can't remember which night. The wait staff is very nice and responsive. Some of them have been there for years. The wine selection surpasses the beer selection by far. I recommend a "tumbleweed" for dessert:) Expect to spend $15-25 per person for dinner. The steak, chicken, or pork chop sandwiches are great for lunch, but dinner is my favorite time to hit "The Barrell" as locals call it. Don't forget to add your pushpin to the map, if you can fit one in there. Note that even though you CAN take children there, it's a better place for adults. The best part is that you can dress casual as it's a very laid back atmosphere. No need for a tie fellas. We love it!
They make great steaks but I always ask for mine to NOT be marinated. Unless you like your steak soaked in Worshestershire sauce, make sure you do this also. What I don't understand about this pricey steakhouse is when you order mushrooms, they are canned mushrooms, not fresh, then their salad mixture is only head lettuce, no leaf lettuce or anything nice. The rest of the salad bar is great but their lettuce is low class grade. Then when you order a beer they serve it in a can. All of these items are confusing when dining at a nice steakhouse. I never mind paying the price but I want it to match the price. These are really bad overlooked details to me.
rusty barrell used to be the best place for steaks, however that was five years ago. The last two times i was "treated" to dinner there, the staff treated us poorly because we were with a party of ten i guess and our needs were ignored. The waitress treated some of the people like they would rather be elsewhere, our guests were from out of town and had never been there. They don't seem to value your business and the meat is a much smaller cheaper cut than it used to be. I have taken my business elsewhere. On my anniversary also i was treated poorly rudely to say the least.
