I have recently used SPCA perry clinic for my dogs annual and I should say that I am only half satisfied. The vaccines were administered Ok, and the physical exam was ok, the doc answered all my questions patiently. However I didn't like the way they are handling the test results... I got Heart worm test and fecal test done and they said they both are negative and then I almost left and was paying the bill and a nurse comes up to me and say by the way your dog tested positive in fecal for hook worms. I said Ok and asked if I can get a report and she say there is no report except that they mention on invoice that the test if performed...then she just tells me to get Interceptor medicine which costs $110 @ SPCA and $68 online at petmeds, so I told them that the markup of SPCA is too high (80% to 100%) and asked for a Rx, she says no, and said they will do a price match for Heartguard/Interceptor and Frontline only. So I was lucky that they gave interceptor for $68. Then she told that I need Drontal , again costs $30 for 2 tabs online and cost $61 @ SPCA, this time no price match, I had to pay $61 as they wont write a Rx.

    Two things here:
    1. From online prices marking up 80% to 100% on all meds including common meds like heartguard is not cool at all. People come to SPCA to save money coz they cant afford expensive vets. The pricematch (limited to Heartguard and frontline only) is disclosed only once you start arguing and not open.

    2. There should be a godamm report when you do a test, the results shouldn't be delivered only orally by tapping on shoulder when you almost left the building. Also list of required meds should be on a paper, and shouldn't be read out to you.

Not sure how much money SPCA saved me on my dogs annual but its very unlikely that I will go there again as the savings most likely will be taken back by their huge markups on the meds, and to add to that I dont want to feel like I am getting a sub standard care for my doggy.

I took my 14 year old sick dog Sweet Pea to the Village Fair clinic for euthanasia, and they were very sweet and compassionate. They made the whole experience less painful for me.

I am so sorry for your loss. I just put my 17 year old lab mix down at Christmas. I know how much it hurts.

Well, thank you! We jst recently adopted a chihuahua mix Logan from the SPCA. He's a wonderful dog, and a lot of company. He will never replace Sweet Pea, but he has his own unique and delightful personality.

I adopted a cute Yorkie they told not to bath her for 10days after the adoption. 4 days later my house is full of fleas, I cant have my 9month old niece crawl around my house. My 7 and 8 year old are fighting fleas off of them all day. Fleas dont go away over night!

The shelter told me thats the chance I take when adopting a shelter pet. What! They want to get these animals in loving homes, but they are giving one every reason to abandon the pet

She's so tiny but I've had to put in the back yard until I figure out what to do with her. I dont know how to make she she's %100 rid of fles.

There whole attitude and customer service was like they didnt care, no concern at all.

My suggestion, take your Yorkie in to the SPCA wellness clinic and get her flea treatment. They will treat any problem that occurs within 2 weeks and not charge you. I'm told this is a really bad year for fleas in Dallas, Good luck!

There is a pill called Capstar that kills the fleas on the dog for 24 hours. After giving that pill use a Veterinarian strength flea treatment. Those cost a little more than Walmart brand, which can cause nurological and seizures, but they work and last 30 days. Also, you will need to use something to treat your house and yard. Then repeat the house and yard again in 2 weeks. Then, monthly keep the flea treatments on your Yorkie. A problem in any shelter is fleas. They are hard to get under control when you have that many animals in one place. They constantly have abused and neglected animals coming in covered in fleas. Once those dogs/cats walk into the shelter their fleas spread. It is hard to get them under control but I know for a fact that they are trying. When you adopt you are given a free exam at their wellness clinics. Any medications your new pet needs are FULLY covered. A free exam and medications, why not? If your pet is sick when adopted, all treatments and medications are covered until your pet is well. This can be a big expense out of the SPCA's pocket. They want these pets adopted to loving homes. But, fleas happen.
