First off, I want to say that Shogun's has been one our favorite restaurants in Texarkana for years. I absolutely loved this place until Sunday, July 26, 2009. My wife and I decided to invite two friends from College Station, TX, to dine with us at Shogun's Texarkana. We are always excited to bring "first timers" for the hibachi show, and the rice, Um Um Um! We love the food, and even better the white sauce is to die for, haven't found a place yet who can beat the white sauce and the salad dressing!
Anyway, on Sunday, July 26, 2009, we all arrived at the restaurant and were seated promptly at a waiting grill. Besides the sticky floors,
You can't beat the dinner for two at the grill the food is wonderful and staff is great
I sat at the bar and had the Sunday Sushi special. For the positives: Great, attentive service. Food came out quick. Decent selection. Good atmosphere. Didn't eat at the Hibachi tables but I'm sure they would have been fine. Opportunities for improvement: Sushi was just not that great. The rice was not firm enough, probably overcooked. Average at best as compared to bigger cities. The salad was great - finally a japanese restaurant that doesn't put ginger dressing on their salads! The soup was tasty and plenty hot. They also had a full bar.
I read a lot of the other glowing reviews that talk about the Sushi and couldn't help but wonder if these folks have ever had Sushi outside of Texarkana? Probably not or they would recognize that Shogun is average. I am told by locals that they fired their best Sushi chef and he has opened his own restaurant (Fuji's). Can't wait to try it next time I'm back in town. I'm sure their Hibachi is fine for entertaining the kids but don't fool yourself into thinking you've found great Sushi in Texarkana at Shogun.
