I am also local and this place is GREAT. Best Ribs I have ever had. I lived in MN for 3 years, and I missed those ribs(and my mama too:-) Famous Daves is good, but there is no contest.
They did have menus for a short while a few years ago. They even added more items, but most people including myself kept saying, "Give me the ribs I got when I did not have a choise."
Heard this was the best BBQ in east texas so we gave it a try. The staff is courteous and attentive. Not your normal restuarant experience. I think they have only 4 things on the menu. I ordered the jalapeno sausage and it was good! It was a large amt of food too. The potato salad was good and so were the beans. A different experience. Glad I went. This place is just a one time thing for me though.
Since I am a local, I wanted to shed some light for those who haven't tried the Tavern before you change your mind after reading all the negative revues. They've never had menus...probably never will, I don't see that as a problem. If you want to know how much something is...just ask - they are hospitable enough to tell you. The service is impeccable - I've never had an issue. They are pricey, but you won't find better service, ribs or potato salad in East Texas (and we have a lot of bbq places!). My husband and I go when we need a "date night" and it usually runs us about $50 for food and drinks - average for a night out without the kiddos. If you are cost-conscious, they are not overly priced, just higher than what you might expect. If you are looking for cheaper, head down I-20 to Bodacious - they are cheaper, but they also don't have a waitstaff or the atmosphere. They serve it "on the line" and you wait on yourself. Anyway, if you haven't tried Country Tavern, I would say you need to at least once to form your own opinion. I think you'll like it!
