Unfortunately, all of our area shelters are overwhelmed with owner surrender and stray dogs. The huge numbers of animals were not expected and there is no additional funds in the budget. The shelter has already run out of food and cut back the hours for full- and part- time employees.
Any dog surrendered to a kill shelter is at risk of being put to sleep as soon as it walks in the door due to space. If a dog breaks with distemper, parvo or any other contagious disease, the cage/run that dog was in is unusable because of the contagion factor. It's absolutely heart-breaking that so many dogs and cats are unwanted. The shelter folks are working within the limitatins set by the city council. They have to hold all strays for 72 hours and have to have room for the estimated number that comes in daily. So the owner released dogs must pay the price.
The interview process is only for pit bulls and their mixes. The shelter is trying to find them good homes and reduce the chances the dogs will be used for fighting. Arlington has a huge pit bull problem.
They need HELP!! What you can do:
Speak up to your city council so they allocate more funds for the shelter
Volunteer! With a limited number of paid employees, the shelter needs volunteers now more than ever since the employee's hours are being reduced due to budget constraints
Vote for mandatory spay/neuter laws. Just look at the number of litters and puppies, especially pit bulls in the shelter
Donate to FAAS (Friends of Arlington Animal Shelter) to help the shelter. If you donate to the shelter, the money goes into a general city fund and could go elsewhere than to help the animals.

Last year, I went to the shelter and did laundry for them when their washer went out. Something like 35 loads each week were done for several weeks at laundromats, paid for by FAAS and done by FAAS volunteers.

The shelter is city run. Arlington residents need to step forward and be heard by the city government to get changes made. Unconstructive criticism doesn't help or change anything. We pay the taxes that support city expenses. $2 million dollars was just spent on bathrooms for city hall. Is that really what our tax dollars should be going for?

My boyfriend and I went looking for a puppy here and we fell for a really cute lab mix. Listed on the details page was '5 month old female, medium size'. Later we received a shock when our vet told us it was a 2 month old male and that he would get to be around 100 pounds. I will never go there again; especially after the payment, paperwork and 'interview' they put us through and they can't get the dog's information right...
