While the food was outstanding, you certainly are paying for it. I'm no stranger to paying $100-$150 per person for dinner - in Dallas. This gets you amazingly attentive service, perfectly executed cocktails, and usually a large, clean & comfortable space to dine in. The service at LD was average, the martinis were watery, the room was dark & tiny. I was surprised to see crap on the walls a la TGIFridays. LD is a small space and we had hell just getting in because of the absurd reservation policy which goes like this: if you want to reserve a table for two in advance, you may only reserve before 6:00 or after 9:00. So if it's your wedding anniversary (ahem) and you're trying to plan your night around a special dinner, you may call the day of your crappy 6:00 reservation and request a better time. We were "lucky" I suppose to get a 7:30 seating last night. The idea, of course, is to stretch those revenues as far as possible. I think this policy stinks.
A myriad of interesting creations are well-executed. Where else can you get a plate of kangaroo nachos? (which by the way were succulent and amazing) The scallops with wild boar were probably the best I've ever had. Ever. We also had rabbit & rattlesnake sausage that was tender, complex, exquisite. For main courses we had the garlic-stuffed filet and the red deer chops, both of which were aboslutely perfect. Oh- and do not leave this restaurant until you try the truffled macaroni and cheese.
Strictly looking at food, LD is a winner. But it is pretty casual. If you want to get all gussied up for a special night out, I would advise that you go to Nana in Dallas where, for the same price, you get a floor-to-ceiling view of the Dallas skyline 22 floors above the ground + equally good food + impeccable service.
What an amazing place! The atmosphere is great! Add an incredible menu that is more urban cusine than streak house, top notch service, and an impressive wine list, and it's one of Fort Worth's finest!
Highly recommend!
My Favorite Steak House of all time: I have eaten at Del Frisco's, 3 Forks, Morton's, and about evey other famous steak house and Lonesome Dove is now my favorite of all time due to the Garlic Stuffed Tenderloin - The best steak I have eaten anywhere!!! The first several time we would go I would try the Buffalo, Red Deer, Sea Bass, and the specials and my wife would get the Garlic Stuffed Tenderloin. My meals were very good, top rate, even outstanding. My wife would save me a bite of her Garlic Stuffed Tenderloin at first and I would say that is outstanding and I am going to have to get it next time. Next time would come and I would try something differet from her again until she refused to share any of her Garlic Stuffed Tenderloin with me, telling me to get my own. I did and moaned with delight in every bite. I'm sorry Chef Tim Love, I can't go back to anything else on the menu - the Garlic Stuffed Tenderloin is the best steak I have ever put in my mouth anywhere!!!! My mouth is watering talking about it. I would drive a hundred miles to have it.
The appetizers are some of the best. Lobster Cakes, Kangaroo Nachos, and Duck Spring rolls, but the Scallops are the absolute best and I highy recommend them. The Organic Butter Salad is our personal favorite and unique with its spicey Texas dressing. The wine list is extensive.
We have come back to the Lonesome Dove more than a dozen times and the service has been consistantly good to outstanding. We did have one night where the waiter was new and the coarses did not flow seamlessly, but the food was still outstanding. We have not seen him since, guess he didn't make the cut. The more experienced waiters have been outstanding, I wish I remembered their names to tell you.
The resturant is set in a hundred year old western salon in the famous Ft Worth Stockyards and has an elegant rustic and romantic ambiance. We had drinks on the Patio overlooking the creek at sunset. We try to find an excuse to go to the Lonesome Dove once a month. Be prepared to spend $50 to $100 per person with the wine and the full meal deal, but truely worth it for the Garlic Stuffed Tenderloin alone.
