First of all I would like to tell you about the great service that I always get at Jim Mcnatt Dodge in Denton Texas! I have been getting my Dodge truck serviced at Jim Mcnatt's service department for five years now and have never been disappointed. Mark Holts always meets me on the service drive with a smile and a kind word. He knows my needs and knows my truck. He only recommends what I need to keep Clair Bell running for another 100,000 miles.
The Service Manager Billy Caselles(sp) has been a reliable and trustworthy friend in the automotive business. He is always ready to help me any time I have had to ask for assistance. Billy actually stayed at the dealership two hours after closing just so I could pick up my truck, all the time telling how much he appreciated my business! I just can't tell you how good that makes me feel for him to stay so late for my convenience and comfort just for an oil change.
I just got my 2007 Sequoia back from the maintenance department and got some great help from Mike Barrow in parts and Sean Fitzgerald in service. Mike spent a great deal of extra time and effort to figure out how to install a hitch and 7 pin connector on a model of Sequoia that was not designed for a 7 pin connector. Sean helped solve a service problem that I created myself when I tried working on the Sequioa myself at home. I have been very happy with McNatt over the years and recommend them highly, both as a place to buy a Toyota and as a place to get it serviced.
In August of 2007, I took my Durango to a local shop for service and they
told me that my Durango had some fairly extensive front end problems
for only having 70K miles. Basically, my mechanic told me that I had
to replace the ball joints and bushings. I took the vehicle Jim McNatt
Dodge and Toyota dealership and asked them to replace the upper ball
joints under warranty (Dodge placed a 100K mile warranty on these
parts due to a high rate of failure). The service technician came back
and told me that the ball joints were within specification and that
the upper and lower control arms were bad. They told me that it would
be over $2000 to fix! I knew that this was just not true. I knew that
the assembly that the dealership offered had the ball joints attached
and came with new bushings so I politely told him that if they were
within specification that I would have someone else do the work.
I took it to my mechanic, and he pulled out the ball joints. One was
marginal, and the other was so bad it was about to break or fall out!
There was almost a quarter inch of slack/play/space in the part
completely unacceptable. I was not really upset at Jim McNatt for
trying to get me to replace the whole assemblies and denying me the
warranty claim, but now I was upset because they didn't even look at
the part that I said was bad!
I took the bad part back to Jim McNatt Dodge and asked the service
manager to look at it. The service manager was very
apologetic. He told me that the service tech must not have looked at
both sides and that my ball joint was severely out of specification
and was dangerously close to failure. He said that he would reimburse
me for my expenses and apologized. I had to go get some receipts for
him. The next day when I came back with receipts, he acted like he did
not know me and was much more abrupt. He then said he wasn't sure
about any reimbursements and would have to talk to the general
manager. He took my info and said that if they would do anything it
would be at their cost of something like $30 and that I would get a
check if they would do anything at all for me. It was close to the end
of the day. He said had to leave and walked out of the room. I tried
several times to call him back. I left several messages and nothing.
It is not in my personality type to go up and confront without warning
in front of the dealership. He was basically telling me that he would
not do anything for me. I was confused as this was just one day after
such a different experience.
Basically, my experience was this: The Jim McNatt Toyota / Dodge
service department, due to either greed or incompetence put me and my
family in danger by telling me that my front end components were
within specification and denying me my warranty claim. They lied and
told me that they would help me with some of my expenses and then
brushed me off and never returned my calls. The cost (about $300 out of my pocket) was not a big deal. I just wanted to share my experience with this dealership. I guess it's typical car dealership antics, but I'll never buy a new car from them. Buyer beware.
