Second only to Mungia's BBQ in Heidenhammer. I love all the spirited reviews and comments about this place - definitely sparks a lot of debate which is very entertaining. Schoepf's definitely keeps it simple and delicious - I love ordering directly from a pit. They are a little stingy with the meat for the price, but it is all so good. The sides aren't the main attraction, but they are decent. The pies and corn bread are delicious, and they offer quite a few meat choices. I've never witnessed problems among the employees - they aren't extremely friendly and bubbly, but they aren't mean either. You can tell they handle large amounts of people, so they are probably in survival mode and trying to keep up. Not making excuses for them, but it doesn't really affect my dining experience there. I sat in the back area (newer) last time and it was warm - need better climate control back there. Otherwise, no complaints. Since Mungia's is only open Fri & Sat night, I have Schoepf's the rest of the week if I get the cravings!
My husband, our three daughters and I ate at Schoepfs for the first time yesterday, we have lived in the area four years now and wondered how we have missed this place. We ordered an array of menu items:
Brisket: husband says 9.5 out of ten. The meat was soft, tender, juicy and smokey. He wanted to go back and we hadn't left yet.
Beans: Delicious, a little smoky spiciness
Potato Salad: Delicious, tangy, dill not the sweet stuff
Coconut Pie: Very good old fashioned pie, perfect ending to an old country meal
Pulled Pork Sandwich: The meat was soft, not too much BBQ sauce, on a burger bun.
Sliced Beef Sandwich: the meat was soft and no complaints from our 11 year old.
Chopped Chicken Sandwich: Had a great deep pit flavor, our oldest didn't care for all the bbq sauce on it but the meat was piled high and she was quite full.
Cheesy Taters: basically scalloped potatoes just cheesier. The girls enjoyed them.
We will be adding Schoepf's to our regular list of places to eat for sure. Was not at all disapointed!
So far it only looks like 2 people have a strong opinion about it not being good. My wife and I ate there on our way back to FW from San Antonio and we were very pleased! Will probably stop anytime we're in that direction.
