Not bad at all!: I have had Japanese food in many different places and in several different types of Japanese restaurants and Shogun is not bad at all considering it's a large chain and considering the unique fare they offer and how much can go wrong when there is so much space for human error (as far as the sushi preparation and the hibachi chefs go). I've been to the Waco location 4 to 5 times and I've never seen any such errors yet. The sushi, tempura and grill items have always been very good and I love the selection that they offer. We usually sit at a table rather than at a hibachi grill. You can still order anything off the menu if you don't sit at a grill. They'll just cook it for you in the back. Sit at the grill if you've never seen the show but once you've seen it then you've seen it. The chicken fried rice and the teriyaki are good as is the large shrimp and vegetable tempura appetizer. They have some excellent sushi selections as well. As far as my wife and I are concerned Shogun is the go-to place for Japanese food in Waco.
The service has always been good as well. It can get a little loud and distracting with the hibachi chefs doing their thing so maybe not the best place for a quiet romantic evening.
Great Sushi: My family found that the sushi was excellent and service was good.
Not Just Food: Trying something new can often lead to disaster, so it's truly a breath of fresh air when spontaneity winds up paying off.
Spending our first year anniversary in Waco left us with a limited number of possibilities for finding a fine dining experience with an edge--something that would be memorable in all of the right ways. After a little thought and a trip down memory lane to Beni-Hana's back in high school, I decided to take the advice of a friend and head down to Shogun with my wife.
Upon entering the place we were immediately greeted with a semi-casual, ambient environment with very friendly and helpful staff. We were seated very quickly by the gentleman who announced that he would be our waiter for the evening. Drinks came along soon afterwards (Blue Hawaiian) and were well suited to taste. Our appetizer of choice was the Vegetable Shrimp Tempura, which proved to be the best we've ever eaten. Our chef arrived promptly on the scene and began preparing our food on the grill in front of us in the most entertaining display of culinary martial arts I've yet seen. While he was getting the grill ready (and entertaining us), we enjoyed both varieties of the soup du jour (Miso soup and the House soup) and salads with a wonderful ginger dressing. The fried rice was magnificent, the steamed rice was cooked to perfection, and all was served and prepared with a flourish. The filet mignon was spectacular in both taste and tenderness; the chicken and scallops melted in our mouths. My wife is very picky when it comes to food, so it came as a surprise to hear that she loved the food as much as I did. I haven't had better food in all of Waco, and would venture to say that Central Texas has nothing quite so excellent as Shogun Japanese Hibachi Grill and Steakhouse. In fact, it was so good that I wound up tipping the waiter and the Chef nearly the full cost of the meal (and this completely sober!). I will recommend this restaurant to everyone. Fantastic service, INCREDIBLE food, 5 Star entertainment--all for prices FAR below Beni Hana's! Thanks Shogun for helping make our first year anniversary both memorable and delicious.
