It Is The Best: It is really good there the service is very good too.The deserts is marvalous.
Great food: I've worked in a restaurant environment since the age of fifteen, my background experience varies from an Italian, Mexican and coffee shop restaurants. Since I've moved form Austin, I've had to leave my comfortable zone when it came to food. But Chilango's has quickly taken my appetite and money away. This Mexican restaurant; or cantina as said in Spanish, is meant for the whole family. This establishment has been a part of San Angelo for many years. Chilango's is located right next to Wilson's auto tire, and if you aren't looking close enough you will drive right by and will have to turn around.
The restaurant looks small from the side of road, but inside are two open wide rooms. When you walk in, there is always a cheerful greet from the cashier, but near the entrance you will see a sign stating, Seat yourself, we can not afford a hostess. This sign doesn't represent poverty but welcomes you to get comfortable and shows the humor that the owners have. Even tough it may get busy during lunch; you rarely have to wait for a table. If you are a nonsmoker, then you dont have to worry about smelling a cigarette as you are chewing on your chips and salsa. This restaurant is one of the only non-smoking restaurants in town. The restrooms are small, but I've never had to wait my turn, seems like everyone wants to stay at their tables and enjoy their authentic Mexican meal.
When you think about a Mexican restaurant, you might think of bright colors and Spanish speaking music, well Chilango's is no different. As you look around the walls you will see mural on the wall, showing off the different activities. Included on the wall is another poster saying, Elvis was here, and left without paying his bill. While you sit and relax, you'll get an itch to grab a blindfold, and baseball bat to try to break open the piñatas hanging from the roof; but you must resist. Chilango's is open Monday to Saturday from 10:59 am to close, the only ones who know what time they close is the staff, another proof of humor by the owner.
If you are looking for great Mexican food for your low college budget, this is the place to be. There are lunch specials Monday through Friday from 10:29 am to 2:30 pm. Just because they are special does not mean you'll leave hungry, for example the lunch special for Tuesday is an option of beef or chicken fajitas with a tea for $5.99, or the Mexican dinner with tea for $4.99. If the specials or not to your appeal the menu has other options available, like my favorite steak jalapeño for $8.99. While you are waiting for your sizzling meal you will have chips and salsa to munch on, but while you are at it add an order of chili con queso, for only $2.50. Another great quality of this restaurant is the speediness for your food to be served. When the food is served quickly, more customers are willing to come back during their hour lunch break. You'll never leave hungry, and you'll be able to leave a little extra tip to the server because of the low prices.
On top of the great prices and food is the service. What I love about this restaurant is that I rarely see a new face. When I come in, my server knows that there a party of two and waits for my guest before I order my meal. Most of the servers do their job with a smile and know their menu like the back of their hand. The servers seem to know on cue when a guest needs a tea refill, or need to check on which is impressive for this small town restaurant. The only default is that there are times when there is more guest then servers, but the servers tend to handle all their tables as professional as possible.
