San Saba Golf Course is a Hidden Gem!: The golf course is located just east of San Saba off Hwy 190. This 18 hole course has been rated by Golf Digest as a 3 star "Places to Play" for several years. The course was cut out of a pecan orchard and is nesteled alongside the San Saba River and regarded as a Texas hidden gem. There is also an LPGA instructor on site that gives lessons, driving range, proshop, and practice green.

Two Courses in One - Old and New: This 18 hole course starts you out on a fairly long and open 9 holes built and opened during the past 20 years. The back 9 is the original course opened many years ago. It is "buried" in the pecan bottoms of the San Saba River. Some fairways are essentially tunnels through 60' pecan trees. # 18 is a par 5 that calls for an approach shot to the green near the clubhouse over 150 yards of water (get that last layup shot as close as you can to the edge of the water) - a real challenge at the end of the round! Over the past 15 years, I've played the course 2-3 times each year and I've found it to be in consistently good condition with very friendly folks in the clubhouse. The greenfees are very reasonable. It has become my very favorite "best-kept-secret-course" in central Texas. I don't have to worry about spilling my secret and spoiling the charm - San Saba is a good two-hour drive from any population center. For those of us who don't mind hiking 3 miles to a high mountain trout steam, San Saba offers a similar experience for the golfer looking for a weekend of 36 holes of golf for less than $150 TOTAL for all greenfees, meals and lodging. You can actually do it for that amount.
