We ate at Zuni Grill while on vacation in San Antonio. We just happened upon it while strolling the riverwalk. It is in a great location in the midst of the action, and the food was great. I had the blue corn enchiladas with smoked chicken, which were probably the best enchiladas I've ever had. My husband had the salmon, which was also very tasty. The drinks and the service were good as well. The mariachi band serenading us was an added touch of fun.
ZUNI FAILS!!! I ate here yesterday with my two girlfriends Mimi and Sasha who are dancers in town. There are several problems with the food here. When working with strong flavors (chilies, moles, etc), like strong colors, it is important to keep them in balance with other flavors, so that one does not overpower another and cover up the more subtle flavors. Sharp fiery spiciness (habeneros) and cutting bitterness (limes) can make peace and share the stage without conflict. Here is where the art of traditional Latin cooking lies: the creation of flavor harmonies that bring together seemingly disparate flavors and integrate them into a unique and magnificent whole. The fresh bouquet of aromatic herbs, unique textural taste of fresh vegetables (squash), and the delicately sweet and luscious flavors of fresh polutry come through the strongly flavored sauce to the foreground and are not smothered by it. At the same time, the bitterness of pungent roots and roasted spices takes a seat in the background, adding its own virtues like bass in an orchestra. The problem with Zuni is that is doesn't know what it wants to be. Is it a tourust trap that caters to the hillbillys from Boerne and dumb Mid-Westerners or is it a niche driven boutiue bistro primarily aimed at gourmets and snobby Olmos Park yuppies? The food lacks direction, the service lacks charm, and the diners walk away perplexed. Mimi and Sasha liked the tacos served here but the salsas were rather weak. Mimi confided that the polutry was not cooked to her standards. When a girl has to eat, it better be good. Especially, before a night shift. This place failed the test. Me and the girls will not be back.
They have a very inovative Brunch menu that is very tasty. It will definitely wake up the rest of you after it wakes your taste buds first.
There is one problem in that the phone number in the listing has been transposed - the correct telephone number is (210) 227 - 0864. Yahoo Local needs to change it.
