| About: | If Austin-area jazz lovers feel ignored, it is justified; the local music scene, multi-faceted as it may be, has always neglected their genre of choice. However, what the region lacks in quantity, the Elephant Room more than makes up for in quality. It has been deemed as one of the ten finest venues in the country by none other than Wynton Marsalis (and subsequently honored by a unanimous resolution of the Texas Senate for having earned the jazz legend's admiration). The appeal stems largely from the club's unceasing lineup of regional favorites, touring greats, and, once in a while, plain ol' jam sessions consisting of anyone who cares to take the stage. |

Wish there was more like this: This is one of my favorite places because of the atmosphere is dark and easy on the eyes. Small tables dot the whole bar, this place is a sitting bar and not too much room for standing. Most of the time there is a small cover but the cover is well worth it because of the talent and music is all ways worthy. The wait staff is one of the best and they will remember your drink order no matter how packed the bar is. The music is Jazz, Big Band, and Blues. The bar is sit up so there is no need for large speakers, just all natural live music. There is no food at this bar, they have a well stocked bar to cater to all taste, and is a great place to take a date or to spend time with close friends.
elephant Room: I been there, done that . Its cool if you like Jazz.
High expectations - kinda disappointed: The staff at our hotel recommended the Elephant Room as the only real jazz bar in Austin. It is a small bar in the basement of an old building downtown, and I can't imagine a better setting for live jazz. Dark, low ceiling, cozy, and grungy...which I'll get back to.
According to the gregarious doorman, they have had live acts there every night of the year for several years, and when the quartet was playing it was easy to imagine oneself in a scene from a 50's detective novel (minus the smoke, which has been outlawed in all Austin bars). The musicians were very good, as one might expect in Austin. The crowd was mostly pairs and small groups, from UT students to the middle aged after dinner crowd.
Still, we expected better. My wife and mother-in-law both commented on how dirty and smelly the place was. The restrooms were run down. The waitress appeared only occasionally, and the foul mouthed bartender was a little off-putting. For some reason the customers at the next table got up and left before they were served. Most surprising was the poor sound system, especially the between sets recorded music which malfunctioned all night.
So, the Elephant Room has a certain appeal if you like a grungy basement jazz bar, but if you expect a clean and professionally run business, look elsewhere.
