Nice staff, clean store...etc. My only complaint is the ring-tailed lemurs that are not for sale and are being kept in a TINY window-style room with just a huge stick to play with... Why are they there? These animals need to be in a zoo or some sort of rescue center and not on display in Lubbock Texas.... :(
The employees at Pet's Plus are nice and helpful. They have a decent selection of pet supplies, toys and treats, but their prices are comparable to or higher than larger pet supply stores. The store is clean and well-kept (although an occasional cricket will escape from his cage!). The resident cat, Callie, can be found curled up, snoozing in a nice patch of sunlight.
The store recently got rid of their fish section, and they no longer carry the selection of rabbits, gerbils, hamsters or guinea pigs that they used to have. They also got rid of the large pen where the rabbits and guinea pigs lived, instead putting the animals into very small, aquarium-like cages (sometimes, with multiple animals per small cage).
Pet's Plus has recently remodeled their puppy area, adding two individual puppy play rooms for customers to get to know the puppies. The only problem with this is that the rooms are not well-ventilated, so when a little puppy has a big accident, the smell is inescapable, even after the mess has been cleaned.
Also, while employees of the store are knowledgeable about some basic animal care, they often seem to be at a loss when asked more specific questions. For example, I recently asked whether a litter of Collie puppies had been screened for Collie Eye Anomaly (a genetic, bilateral eye disease with complications ranging from mild vision impairment to complete blindness). The response I got from both employees was, "Uh, what's that? I don't think we test for stuff like that here." They also said that the puppies had not had their hips checked, another problem area for Collie puppies.
The pros for Pet's Plus include:
Friendly staff
Clean store
Decent selection and price
The cons include:
Small mammals in very small cages
Lack of knowledge about screenings for puppies
Lack of ventilation in puppy rooms
Knowledgable, friendly staff: Pets Plus is the best all around pet store in Lubbock. They have several staff members who have been there more than 20 years! They have all your pet's needs, and if they don't, they will go out of their way to get it for you. Think of Pets Plus when voting for the Best of Lubbock!
