In Midland for the weekend. Saw the good reviews on Ben's and decided to give it a try, even though I'm on a low carb diet (I know, I know... but when in Rome!). Only real option was the taco salad with fajita beef substituted for the standard (ground) beef. Nothing fancy here... a true hole in the wall. But the comments about the service are spot on. Family run, friendly people all around (my server was a former football player for the fabled Permian HS team featured in the movie Friday Night Lights). And the food? FANTASTIC!!! Some of the tastiest Tex-Mex I've had.
Went there for dinner one night and if you are not looking closely you will drive right past!
It is obvious that folks do not go there for the decor......so it must be the food.
My waitress was very nice and attentive without hovering. I asked her the difference between "enchiladas" and the stacked....the stacked are just that-layered rather than rolled. I asked her if they were good and she recommended the green chili chicken version. Sounded good to me so that is what I went with. It took a long time for the entree to arrive and by the time they got there I had already finished a basket of chips. When they did arrive, they looked like they had just been imported from the surface of the sun! I kid you not, it took a full 5 minutes for the beans and the enchilada sauce to stop bubbling! Even after that, it was so hot that it would burn your tongue (shades of pizza taking layers of skin off of the roof of your mouth).
Once they cooled a little they had a good flavor, though there was much less chicken than I expected...(perhaps 2-3 spoonfuls)you really had to hunt for it. So you are pretty much left with the flavor of the tortillas, sauce and cheese. If I had wanted nachos, I would have ordered nachos.
The price was OK, but I was really expecting something a little more- maybe this was an off night. I will probably give them another chance when I come back to town, but there are other places ( Ajuua's or Delicia's) where you get a big ol' plate of food with lots of meat for about the same price.
Great food, great prices and the staff is top notch! This is one of Odessa's best kept secrets, a small family operated restaurant with AWESOME mexican food!
