I took my vehicle to Stangs to have the radiator repaired. $1250 and TWO WEEKS later it was fixed. Days later we noticed a leak under the vehicle as well as a loud squeek from the front wheels. We took it back to stangs regarding these issues. We were given an estimate for $660 to repair a water pump and power steering hose. After speaking to David at Stang I asked about the loud squeel, he said they did not hear one. For weeks before the whole neighborhood could hear me coming from miles away, yet they heard nothing. Highly unlikely. David had the vehicle checked again and said it was from the leak on a belt and the belt would be replaced taking care of the squeel. Upon paying my $660 for the water pump which was suprisingly not noticed when the radiator was repaired??????? My wife left with my vehicle to come home with the loud squeel all the way home. So Daivd who told me #1 he did not hear the noise than #2 told me it was fixed was incorrect on both accounts. Upon living in Colorado for the past 4.5 months my vehicle has been in Stangs shop for 4 weeks to fix a radiator and water pump. Terrible service, terrible communication and I firmly believe that they are guesstimating not estimating the problem. Playing the odds on what will fix the issue with my hard earned money.
We do understand that Tim is very frustrated, but also understand that all smart consumers know there are two sides to every story. When aware of the FACTS, it is obvious these are unjustified and slanderous statements by Tim.
Every time a vehicle is brought to our facility the customer signs an authorization form that not only approves the fee’s they will be charged but confirms what their concern is and what procedures will be performed. On the first visit, July 18, the concern Tim documented with us was overheating, the temperature gauge went into the red, and the radiator is leaking. The technician verified, on the same day, an extremely large leak from the radiator and recommended a radiator (due to the leak), a thermostat (due to the overheating), a radiator cap (wouldn’t hold pressure), both hoses (due to extremely poor condition), and a cooling system service (due to the condition of the cooling system). Tim approved the work on July 25 and the vehicle was completed and picked up July 28, one day earlier than promised and only 10 days after it was brought in, NOT 2 WEEKS. The total was $967.85, $51.49 less than approved, and not $1250.00.
On October 11th, 11 weeks later, not days, the vehicle was brought back with concerns for a fluid leak that Tim believed to be power steering fluid. The technician identified a damaged pressure hose from the power steering pump and also a leak from the water pump. Although Tim was called the same day with an estimate, these items were not approved until the morning of the 21st. A technician volunteered to stay late and finish the vehicle that evening to insure they would have it for the weekend. The total was actually $648.76, and we gave them a discount of $20 due to their parents being such great customers, making the total they paid $628.76, not $660.00.
At no time was the vehicle brought in for a squeal. The vehicle was test driven twice, with other employees, and the only squeal noted was from the belt due to damage and coolant contamination from the water pump. David assured Tim that squeal would be addressed with the new belt we included with the water pump replacement.
Upon picking the vehicle up, Tim’s wife was frustrated with the Check Engine Light that was on, even though it had been on since the vehicle arrived at the first visit in July, and was not a concern they communicated they wanted addressed. Despite the late night pickup, I took the time to retrieve the code from the vehicle for them (lean condition), and explain the possible causes for FREE.
Afterwards, Tim was very frustrated about a squeal from the front end, stating we did all the above items in vain without addressing his primary concern. As a courtesy we inspected his vehicle for the source of this noise, identifying damaged brake pad squealers that were coming in contact with the rotors under specific conditions, not because of worn brake pads. During this FREE inspection we identified that the rotors were below the safe specification and should be replaced, obviously not addressed at the last brake service performed somewhere else on this vehicle. Additionally we modified the squealers for them to eliminate that squeal as well.
The vehicle was here a total of 20 days, most of which were spent waiting for Tim’s approval to perform the work that was necessary. Nothing was replaced on Tim’s vehicle that was not necessary for the documented concerns, or that he did not approve to be performed.
Because Tim’s statements are completely false, Tim’s comments should be removed from this site.
We took our car in to address an unidentified noise that turned out to be a bad wheel bearing. The folks at SAT were very attentive to our description and understood it thoroughly, as evidenced from the notes the mechanic took while we chatted on the phone. We took the car in and the first thing I noticed was that the reception area doesn't look like a typical waiting area at a car shop. It was clean and didn't smell of old oil and grease, looked more like the inside of a house than a repair shop, and was comfortable. We were greeted with smiles and direct eye contact, which is welcoming. David spoke clearly and made sure we understood the process they'd take to find the cause of the problem and then set our expectations as to when we'd hear back from them. Only then, once we gave our approval, would they proceed to fix the problem. He even made sure our kids weren't ignored and sent them out the door with a box of cookies. Later that afternoon, we were told it was a faulty bearing and no other issues seemed to be afoot. He then said that it'd be fixed that afternoon or the next morning. It was ready at 11:00 a.m. the next day. SAT also provided more inspection and a list of items that they suggested be attended to in the near future (on a convenient chart organized by severity of the components evaluated), but nothing else needed to be done. The final cost was under the original quote and was very reasonable given they needed to do some research. I usually hate taking my car to mechanics since I always feel like I should know more about cars and that I'm being taken advantage of. But not here. The folks at Stang do it right because they are upfront about how they operate, they follow through on what they say they're going to do, and they provide documentation that shows the process from my first phone call to the recommendations they make for any future needs we might have. On top of it all, their prices are fair, if not a deal considering the customer service they provide. We highly recommend Stang Auto Tech for any of your automotive needs.
Took my car there after it failed emissions. Initial est was $105 - $249 and they told me they would test and repair as issues were found. Kept the car for 2 days giving me various stories when I called -- Still testing, fixing vacuum leaks etc, need it another day. Final went in to see what they were doing and was presented with an estimate for over $1800 (they didn't provide a written estimate after I refused repairs and now claim it was a few hundred less) to replace the intake gasket among other things, and a bill for $239.28 for inspection. No repair work had been completed not even the vacuum leaks they kept telling me about. Took it to another shop, they found 2 bolts loose on the Intake and suggested I tighten them, replace the O2 sensor and give it a tune up myself. Did the work and passed Emissions the next day. When I went back for a refund got the same run around for 2 days and then they told me no, because they had only estimated inspection not repair work.
UPDATE: Please note they they now claim they didn't touch the intake on previous repairs, although they were working on the fuel injection system which is closely associated. Given it was several years ago and I'm not a mechanic this may be true, but I do find the prospect of a bolt unthreading itself pretty had to believe.
We are very disappointed that we were unable to meet Kevin’s expectations and have him be thrilled with our accurate and thorough process. Although there is missing and inaccurate information, we feel it is best to have all the information available for those interested in our operation.
Yes it did take us two days to get Kevin all the answers on his Jeep. There were many vehicles still here from the day before with a multitude of approved procedures that deserved our attention first because they were here first. It is unfortunate and I certainly can empathize with Kevin’s frustration over this issue.
Kevin mentions the initial estimate was for $105-$249, however he fails to mention the estimate he authorized for that amount was for “Emissions Failure Inspection, Diagnostic Testing & Analysis”. Kevin had this vehicle in 4 times earlier for other work, 3 of which included an inspection and testing for other failures, prior to repairs being authorized or performed, so he is well aware of our process to test and inspect prior to authorizing repairs.
Replacement of the intake manifold gasket is the correct procedure to address a leak from this gasket.
Because it is leaking, and there is no way to know how long it has been leaking, tightening of the bolts may temporarily correct the symptom, however would not be warrantable because of the potential damage to the gasket from the bolts being loose and the possible damage from the existing leak.
Had we attempted to tighten the bolts and broke one (which does happen), we would then be responsible to repair the broken bolt, and would not have corrected the emissions failure because of the other failure.
The inspection results did identify the two major items causing the emissions failure: (by Kevin’s own admission), for less than the amount he originally authorized: Vacuum leaks from the intake manifold and the failed Oxygen Sensor.
We also identified other items failing per industry standard tests that would contribute to a failed emissions tests (contaminated oil and catalytic converter), plus two safety items (steering column and front tires).
The estimate provided in writing to Kevin for the emissions failure is: Intake manifold gasket replacement at $508.23, Oxygen Sensor Replacement at $151.03, Oil Service at $42.32. Catalytic Converter (if required) at $369.97, Grand Total for everything, including the testing, even if the converter was required equals $1412.36, including all taxes and fees. Nothing provided to Kevin came close to $1800, why would we tell him more than the printed invoice and estimate we gave him.
Although 4% of our customers will agree with Kevin, 96% of our customers agree with Patrick (see review below), because we do save them a lot of money, and provide them with great value and the information to make informed decisions. We believe this is the professional, honest, and ethical way to operate an automotive business.
