| About: | Lovers of Latin food seeking time out from Mexico's culinary recon quest of the gringos can check out Cuba Cuba Cafe & Bar, a bright little spot where the service is friendly and the patio provides a romantic setting for exploring shrimp-creole-stuffed plantains, mojo-marinated beef or chicken or bacardi-painted mahi mahi. Cuba Cuba is also a popular after-work oasis, thanks to the various rum concoctions available at the bar. |

I always liked the idea of this place. Family owned and the owner is a first generation Cuban-American which, one would HOPE, meant that she knew how to make really authentic and good Cuban food.
When I got there, the food told another story. The black beans and rice were ok but nothing special (and $2.50 for a cup of cooked RICE and another $2.50 for the BEANS!?) The plantains were overdone and not very flavorful. The "Cuban Sandwich" was good, but the bread was waaaay too dried out from the press (think almost a cracker consistency). Not like what I remember growing up in Miami.
In terms of the atmosphere, this place is very small and intimate (which is fine when you don't have a large group of rowdy people with the sound echoing all over the place.) My wife and I found it difficult to carry on a conversation while the people at the table about 10 ft from us stood around talking loudly and reading each other trivia cards.
I guess we'll stick with the Cuban food "franchise" downtown for now until we can try somewhere else.
Was visiting from South Florida and had the best cuban food that I have ever had. The atmosphere was great and had a bunch of great mojitos. Definately go back when I'm in the are again.
In short, Drinks are still to die for, go some where else for dinner.
- Bartender that Friday was all was class.
- Friendly "rocker" hostesses
- 15 min wait on a busy Friday night
- Ambiance is clean, cultural, and exciting
- Snapper Ceviche - app dish has improved, best ceviche I've had in 8 years.
- Dinner #1: Enrique's Palomilla (Pan Steak with fries on top) DISAPOINTING
- Dinner #2: Grilled Lamb Churrasco - asked for medium rare, got medium with charred outside. Lamb rib chop or lamb loin chop would have been better then this sirloin chop. Felt like I got a Ford Pinto serving at a Cadillac Escalade price.
- Dessert: Cuatro Leches - BRAVO... great postre!
The food has been better. We weren't the only ones talking about the portions under our breath. I HIGHLY recommend CubaCuba for their professional service, OUTSTANDING Ceviche, and adult beverages. If you're looking for a memorable cultural dinner, head on over to Cafe Brazil.
