| About: | The owner of Mercury Cafe calls it a community center. The cafe exudes a vague hippie aura and serves as a restaurant, bakery, coffeehouse, dance club and concert hall. It is hard to pinpoint the exact style of this eclectic nightspot, serving up everything from Celtic and Cajun to theater and poetry. Swing and salsa bands are regulars on the second floor, which accommodates 350. The main dining room might feature a concert pianist one evening and a string quartet the next. The dinner menu offers salads, sandwiches, pasta dishes and steak. |

An old standard: One of the longest-established coffee spots in town and with good reason - there are a ton of interesting events here, the people are varied and great for people-watching, the venue is clean and warm with lots of wood. I do agree, the food here is not for gourmet visitors - it is best for vegans with a desire to punish themselves, but in that group of interests it's highly suitable. There have been several times I have not gotten far on food I ordered, but my vegan friend devours hers happily. Service is of course much better in terms of speed and reliable table service when the venue is not as busy, but service is always pleasant and comfortable in tone. I adore the variety of events that are hosted here.
Friday Night Open Mic Poetry: There is a poetry open mic every friday night, except the last friday of the month. Sign ups start at 9:30 pm. The poetry goes on until midnight or later.
overrated, even for a vegetarian. no credit cards!: this place came highly recommended, and as a vegetarian i am pretty appreciative of any veg-friendly establishments. i will say that the place is smoke-free which is a big plus in my book. it also has an interesting look inside that is enjoyable. that's about it though. we went on a friday night, and it was busy, and already at 8PM they were out of tempeh. completely out. that surprised me. then, each of the beers i ordered arrived lukewarm - only slightly cold which was probably a function of the time it took for the server to pick them up from the bar. the phrase "i'll be right back" is not to be believed here. my salad was OK. my entree, tofu enchiladas, was crap-ola. it was essentially some waterlogged rice and beans, wrapped in tasteless tortillas, swimming in a murky swamp of goop. to top it all off, THEY DON'T TAKE CREDIT CARDS!! and they don't tell you until it's time to pick up the bill. oh, don't worry, they have an ATM on-site, (don't forget to notice they get the $2 surcharge you fork over just to take out cash). come on, it's 2006 already, the whole "no credit cards" thing isn't "edgy" anymore, it's just "inconvenient" and "irritating". i definitely would NOT go back here.
