I recently visited here for the first time last weekend (CU Graduation) and my experience was horrible! The food was OK nothing too exciting but the problem with with the wait staff. A loud group nearby our table was loudly celebrating which is one thing- what went wrong was when the wait staff joined in....even having a napkin fight in the middle of the dining room! Our server felt badly and tried to stop it- didn't work. Their waiter actually stopped our meal to congratulate a dinner on graduating (um a student at every table there had graduated). If I'm paying $30 for a meal I expect not to be in such a horrible ill run environment.
The red lion in is located 3 miles up the Boulder canyon; it is in an older building next to Boulder creek. The rooms are small with not many windows but the lighting is OK.
I ordered the filet mignon and soup, to start with they brought out bread rolls that were very plain and tasted like cheap grocery store picnic rolls very bland and commercial made. The cream of asparagus soup tasted very bland like it was from a can and the pieces of asparagus in it were completely mush and soggy like they sat in a can for months or years, I am quite sure it was canned soup.
At this point I was very worried what the rest of my expensive meal was going to be like. I ordered the filet mignon it came out and it was a good piece of meat, I felt a little better. The filet mignon was OK it was it was good piece of meat and cooked OK but just was very plain and dry like a steak from a chain restaurant.
All the sides were poor the mashed potatoes were instant from a box and the other vegetables were fresh but just boiled and very plain. Usually at that kind of price range you get real potatoes and some sautéed vegetables.
It would have been an average $25 meal from a chain restaurant but when I paid double I was very unimpressed.
Big prices but only average food, save your money this place is not worth it..
Great place with unique menu: We love places like this when its done right, and it is. The menu is outstanding and the food top notch. We had the Quail with Huckleberry sauce, which was the best I have had. We also had the Wild Boar, which can be tough to prepare, but was done perfectly. Staff was top notch and great service.
