I enjoyed their red wine flight #2 and we also did the Brie fondue - it was tasty and I thought they gave us a fair amount of dipping goodies. We sat in the basement which is nicely decorated. They had a guitar player there that night and he was really good. I thought their prices were fair.
So my husband and I decided to Celebrate our Anniversary at Mona Lisa. We had heard about this "Fondue" restaurant however had never tried it until last night. First off we were incredibly disappointed but tried to make the best out of the situation instead of ruining our Anniversary. To start we walked in and all was quiet we were even unsure if they were even open although we did have reservations. We were seated in the way back corner and we both noticed how quiet it was "no music?" we said to each other hmmm. Finally it got to the point where we could hear everything else in the restaurant so my husband asked our waitress if there was music which she finally had turned on. The Ancient speaker system was nothing like we had anticipated and poor Michael Buble sounded like he had a cold.
As we were explained the menu I ask our waitress what they charged for a corking fee since I had brought a special bottle of champagne that you can't even purchase here in CO. She said "oh we don't do that here its against the city regulations" WHAT I have never heard of that. I was ready to walk out. We were honestly in shock. Not to mention that the wine and champagne list was horrible. We didn't even give them the satisfaction of ordering a bottle off of their list. Instead we went home and drank our bottle of champagne at the end of the night.
My husband ordered the Caesar salad which had boxed croutons. One would think with all that extra stale bread they have left over at the end of the night they could at least make there own Seasoned croutons. Then came our Cheese fondue, which wasn't even melted all the way but we tried it hoping it would get better. A basket of bread, some veggies and fruit but wasn't that impressed with the flavor you couldn't even taste the wine.
Next was our main course which we chose the traditional. We substituted the brat for extra shrimp which was a better choice since the portion sizes looked like something out of a kids meal. The main course we decided was more like a "FONDON'T" complete rip off.
We continued on to the chocolate since after all we all ready spent way to much on this place might as well end it on a sweet note. We had half milk chocolate and half white which wasn't bad however the dipping selections where very small and we had to keep asking for more just to get our moneys worth. To make the night a bit more entertaining we also decided to do our own little "roasting" so we caught our marshmallows on fire till they were a nice golden brown then dipped them in the chocolate. The waitress was a bit alarmed and thought we were going to catch the place on fire. Which we didn't of course...silly waitress!
All in all we won't be recommending Mona Lisa to any one and will be telling everyone about our experience and to Never go there Melting Pot is way Better and less expensive.
I refer to our dining experience here as the $50 potato dinner. The potatoes WERE quite good, and I enjoyed my spinach salad. But it was all downhill from there.
The first disappointment was their use of the word fondue, which the average person takes to mean the pot of boiling oil. Not here; they use the "Swedish" version of fondue which means you're cooking your own food on a grill at your table.
After the salad/potato course, they brought out our tiny portions of meat and the HIDEOUS sauces. We'd chosen to sit outside (second mistake) and our meat never cooked, no matter how small we cut it up. We're lucky to have walked away without getting sick!
Even the cheese didn't melt.
It's a very pretty place, but if you go, be prepared. Don't expect traditional fondue. DON'T sit outside. You might want to pre-eat before going unless you plan on ordering several courses.
