On a sunny February day we happened into Kanab around lunchtime. Our plan was to go to the Rocking V Cafe but we found that it was closed for the season. As we peered into the Rewind Diner, a local worker passing by commented that they had really, really good food. I have to admit that taking a recommendation from someone unknown and from Utah was chancy but it turned out he was right.
The interior of the Rewind Diner tries VERY hard at looking like a 50's soda shop. So we were figuring it would be heavy on the burgers and fries but no, we were offered a vegetarian menu as well as the regular menu. (Apparently veg food can not be sullied by being on the same menu as meat.) We had a faux gyros wrap which was so tasty that it didn't need to be called faux anything. Also we had a falafel plate. The falafel was great! The hummus it was served with had enough texture that it didn't just ooze out of the pita. This was a great lunch and totally unexpected in this remote corner of Utah.
I stumbled onto the Rewind because of a comment that someone at Best Friends made to me. At first I was reluctant to enter because it looks like a 1950's soda counter operation and I only expected to find burgers and hot dogs on the menu. What a surprise - this is a really fine restaurant with an outstanding menu!!! If you want vegetarian they've got it. You want fish - they cook it like you wouldn't believe. And, in keeping with the soda counter feel of the place, you can get a great milk shake/malt. This isn't a big place and the service can be slow as they fill up, but the best things are worth waiting for and you won't be disappointed!!!
While the service can be a little slow at this wonderful diner, it's always worth the wait in my experience. Created and individually cooked meals are great, both in flavor and interesting combinations. One of my favorite sandwiches is the filaful (guessing on spelling here) and everything is fresh and excellent and also there's several vegetarian and vegan options.
Always a favorite of mine and I recommend often.
