Baker Nursery is a Phoenix institution. The original Mr. Baker is now 86 years old (as of 2008), and still lives on the premises, although his daughters and the other employees do most of the work. It's frequently a busy place, but they always have time for a chat and whatever friendly gardening advice you may need. The selection of roses especially (during the proper planting time in the spring) is first class. The prices are somewhat higher than the big-box stores, but because the plants are well cared-for they are more likely to survive, and you can feel proud to be supporting a real honest-to-goodness family business that has been 60-ish years in the making.
Baker's Nursery is a haul for us, but we will make the drive because it is the top nursery in town. I like Berridge too, but for selection, price and service, Baker can not be beat. Watch out for the review from dcrop - he or she has some ax to grind and has been going all over the web saying bad things about Baker. I am sorry he/she had a bad experience, but I have been shopping there for years and will make the drive to go back to get the best.
knowledgeable, professional, helpful: I am not a gardener! I can rely on Baker's to suggest plants for the location I want to plant. I can rely on them to give complete info about the plant. They have continued to experiment with plants from all over and recommend only those that thrive. I have ginger and a raphis palm growing outside for over 20 years, that they recommended. If I have a question, I call and receive courteous, professional advice.
