| About: | What they also have, despite the Irish-sounding name, is genuine German cuisine. Remember the movie Murphy's Romance ? They have the bar from that film at this cute little downtown Glendale cafe. Choose from a full selection of schnitzels, sauerbraten, and wursts, plus a comforting German-style potato salad and what local food critics have said is the best strudel in town. Most dinner entrees, beers and wines are quite reasonably priced. |

We went here after seeing it featured on Diners, Drive In's and Dives. I now have my doubts about Guy Fieri. The waiter was a slow and confused college kid, who didn't seem to care about what he was doing. I ordered the Sauerbraten (which I LOVE and was really excited about because Guy specifically recommended it) and it was fairly dry thin roast beef with very sour cherry gravy, as if they took pie filling and added a lot of vinegar and a little beef gravy. I don't know if that's sometimes how it's served but it was nothing like what I expected or was used to and I was very disappointed. Everything else seemed to be ok but nothing special. There are definitely better German restaurants in town (I'm a fan of Bavarian Point). We will not be back.
Some of the reviewers have given bad and good reviews, I will give an objective review after 3 visits being a Glendale Resident and very Neutral: The food is great (try the Spiegzdinner, it's wonderful with the spices), however, the portions are "normal" dinner size, but not "large or hearty" for the price - that's the one thing I'd ask for - bigger portions. The service is so-so depending on which server you get, some are johnny on the spot, others don't check up as often as they should, but the service still is decent in my opinion. I am a Glendale resident and have been to this restuarant many times, and each time despite the diffent levels of service, the food has been GREAT! They have authentic German beers on-tap, as well, suprisingly, Yagermeister on tap! Yes, you heard me right. The atmospehere and decoration is authentic German and to me, feels great and like I am in a real German resturant - it's definitely one of the best resturants to add to "German feel and decoration" in Phoenix/Glendale. Overall, you'll love the food, but sometimes, like others have said, the service can be so-so -- sometimes good, sometimes bad. My experiences have been OVERALL positive so far.
Expect a "buzz" from one of their large-size German Pilsner beers!
Still, I'd recommend the resturant. On weekends, call ahead for reservations as the restuarant can become busy during weekends, PACKED during Oktoberfest, and IMPOSSIBLE to get into without a lenghty wait during events in Downtown Glendale.

I drive a taxi in Phoenix, and have been here a couple of times. I thought the food was both affordable and delicious, but don't take it from me. Two of my passengers were from the former Yugoslavia. I dropped them off in downtown Glendale, and recommended this place to them. They were delighted by it. They said it was the best food they had had in America, and was just like the food they got back home in central Europe. Great place. But don't drive; take a cab because you will want to try a few of their authentic German beers.
