I have to say that we didnt really care for this place. We had to wait a few minutes to be seated even though it wasnt busy. When we were seated, the chips and salsa came quickly and we didnt have to wait too long for the waitress to get to us for drinks. They didnt have our favorite cheese dip which is common in all the Mexican places in the south. The waitress looked at us like aliens had popped out of our heads when we asked about it and she stated that there was no cheese dips of any kind there. It just went down hill from there. We needed a few minutes to look over the menu and that seemed to irritate the waitress. She was very rude to us. We ordered drinks and the realized that there was no kids items on the main menu so when we asked for one, the waitress rudely stated that she would have to charge us for a large drink. I guess this menu was a little bit of a culture shock for us. After the waitress was so rude and the menu was unappealing, we left only paying for the drinks. The food may be great but we wouldnt know and because the waitress was rude, we will be hard pressed to return. I will say that every time we have pass by this place, it is packed so it must be doing something right.
El Palacios was recommended to us by an employee at our hotel as the best mexican in town. We had a group of four and were seated quickly at the beginning of the dinner rush. Our waiter was very helpful and friendly. They start you out with two salsas, been dip, and tortilla chips all homemade and delicious. All in our group were very happy with their food, We ate all we could, but there was still a lot left over, they give you huge portions. I got the chicken mole, oh my god, it was amazing, so rich and savory, with the perfect balance of spices without being spicy, served with rice and beens and homemade corn tortillas. At the end of our meal our waiter brought us a plate of sweet fried tortillas filled with cherries and topped with whipped cream. It was so nice to eat at a place where they give you a starter and a dessert. We were all very happy with this restaurant, it was authentic and creative. It also seemed like a local favorite. A really great and casual place with great quality food, I over heard the table behind us say the it was "5 star quality" and I couldn't agree more, i highly recommend this restaurant.
A Little Santa Fe Railway, a Little Old Mexico, una Lonche Grande y Bueno
October 20, 2008
Kingman is a place I've landed in for many reasons since I was five years old. Its a town built on railroads, mining, ranching, and traveling with a wide span of qualities in it's restaurants. There are several places I wouldn't eat again, and several I'd love to go to again. El Palacio is the place I stop the most.
They start you with mild and hot salsa, a small bowl of refried bean dip and a basket of chips. The main courses and lunch specials do more than fill one up. This trip we had a ground beef burro enchilada style a fajita salad, and two monster ice teas. Kingman can get hot. Stay hydrated!
The building was some kind of railroad related business built about 1900. The ceilings are about 14 feet high and original tin, the outside awnings keep the sun off the windows, the shading gives the place a great afternoon light showing off the stained and beveled glass of the dividing walls and lighting up the Mexican folk art and plastic plants on the walls. Background music is Mexican country and mariachi.
I'm not a fan of ground beef Mexican food, but the bites I tried tasted good. The fajita salad had a tiny foundation of iceberg lettuce mounded with grilled chicken, red, yellow and green peppers and onions; a little fresh red cabbage for color, and excellent avocado for flavor.
When it was all over but the lettuce, our waiter brought us 'fruititas.' Cooked apples in a soft fried cinnamon-dredged flour tortilla.
About $20 for two of us, including tip. If you must hit the restroom before you hit the road, I've usually found it clean, neat and well supplied.
I don't know when we'll get to some of those other good Kingman eateries.
