Beware for the old bate and switch routine!

When I made my reservation for the Golden Nugget hotel and casinol, Laughlin I was told a total amount price for my two day stay. At check out the amount had more then doubled from what I was quoted. When I questioned it all I got was, “sorry sir nothing I can do about it" wnen I refused to pay the inflated amount I was told "we already have your credit card” Since then all my phone calls and emails are ignored!

It doesn't get any better than this in Laughlin. The Golden Nugget fits right into the more reserved and laid back feel (as opposed to Las Vegas), yet still provides a very pleasing experience. Don't let their mostly bare-bones website fool you -- the "GNL" is full of everything one could want from a casino/resort other than the crowds and the high prices. The room I stayed in for three nights was extremely comfortable, especially the high, soft bed (those who require a firm mattress should beware). Everything within the room was extremely clean and well maintained. The bathroom was spacious with a deep sink and plenty of above-average towels. Every single member of the staff except one (a poor waitress who had just been undeservedly harassed by an unkind patron) seemed genuinely happy to be there and eager to please.

The dining choices range from good to very good, although I did not stop in the Saltgrass Steak House. The Deli is small and looks unimpressive, but the food there is quite acceptable for a quick bite. Harlow's has decent to good coffee shop/diner-style fare. The best place for both drinking and eating was the Joe's Crab Shack location downstairs right on the Colorado River. The seafood is of good quality and quite tasty, and the drink selection (especially for beer) is the best I found there. The gift shop carries an extremely limited selection of snacks and beverages if you want to take something up to the room, but their clothing and souvenir offerings are quite nice for those who want such things.

Like all but two of the Laughlin area casino resorts, the GNL has easy access to the river walk that puts you an easy distance away from the River Palms to the south and the Pioneer and Colorado Belle to the north (at the time we visited, various bits of construction made the journey beyond the CB a bit more creative). If you don't want to walk, the river taxi stop at the GNL will take you anywhere from the Riverside down to Harrah's Laughlin for only $4.

If you're a gambler who, like me, prefers places not too big or bright, you will love the Golden Nugget's casino floor atmosphere. For you non-smokers who hate the small selection of gaming in the tiny smoke-free areas offered by some casinos (including the GNL), you will find that this is one of the best ventilated gaming areas you've ever been in. While they don't have the most machines and tables in town, you should have no problem getting into the game you want at almost any time of day and not have to shoehorn yourself through a crowd to get to it.

As they always say, your mileage may vary depending on your own tastes and wants out of a visit to a place like Laughlin. For me, it was a perfect fit at a great price and I got much more out of it than I expected. Unless you require a bigger pool scene or more and younger people to gawk at, I can't see how most anybody could go wrong with the Golden Nugget Laughlin. I can say this for sure -- after walking through all of the other casino resorts in Laughlin on this last visit, you certainly won't find a place that is cleaner or better maintained.
