I used to frequent this restaurant in the late 90's when frequently traveling to Las Vegas. It was excellent. It was because of this that I made reservations last week during a trip to celebrate a major birthday, meeting friends flying in from another city. When I made reservations I sensed something different but dismissed this as a bad connection from my cell phone. When I walked into the restaurant I could tell it wasn't the same place. The old clientele was comprised of Japanese businessmen and Japanese tourists. After being seated and our drink and food order being taken I told our friends that I didn't think the waitress understood our order. We eventually got our drink but after another 40 minutes had no sign of our food. I thought at least the edamame would show up. The woman who sat us came over and told apologized for not taking our order. We told her the waitress had already taken it but apparently never placed the order with the cooks and sushi chefs. By this time we had noticed the restaurant was in disrepair and were convinced that this was not under the same owner as I had remembered. The once traditional sushi was replaced with many of the "nouveau" rolls that many times have so many sauces that they try and hide the bad quality of the fish. We inquired about the ownership and discovered they had been sold to the present owners two years ago. This explains the absence of the old clientele and the replacement by non-Japanese customers. A shame since this was one of my special nights and was looking forward to sharing this little "find" to my husband and friends. We asked for the check and took a cab to Hamada's of Tokyo. The meal was fantastic and the evening saved. I have to say the hostess and waitress at Tokyo were very apologetic and gracious. The restaurant just no longer lived up to my discerning standards for a Japanese restaurant.
