We bought two Double Yellow Headed Amazons from Robin in October 2005. She allowed our four WELL BEHAVED kids into the store, and never showed a moment's irritation with our or their curiosity! We inundated her with endless questions, and wanted to hold every bird in the store. She taught us how to handle amazons, and even went into the intricate differences between the Blue Fronts and the DYH Amazons, to help us decide which was right for our family. Robin is a passionate bird person, which means that she truly looks to place them with the right family. Over the years, we have returned many many times, and Robin has always asked how Juju and Gaia are. Through the three years we have had them, we have always felt that she was just a phone call away, if we had any issues or questions. She has a heart of gold, and has taken in many birds that she knew she could not rehome, just to give them another shot at being socialized, and eventually rehomed. I had the immense pleasure and privilege to be given a tour of the breeding facility where all of the babies are born (she does not do this for customers), and I have to say that this woman is passionate, and dedicated beyond description. All of the breeding birds are given the highest level of care, and live in spacious, clean quarters where they are protected from the elements, and given a varied, high quality diet with fresh clean water and socializing opportunity. We have moved out of the state, and still call Robin to send us supplies for our babies. Our birds will have a forever home with educated, confident owners, all because of Robin
Hawk.
Robin is very unhelpful and deceitful. On the phone she told me she had two very tame and hand raised cockatiels. When I arrived with my son, she "picked out" one bird that she thought would be a good match. The bird did not look anything like what my son was looking for. Part of the buying process is picking out what pet we, as buyers WANT. #2. The bird was not tame at ALL. It had to be held in a towel in order not to fly! The toys are all low quality and over priced. The only handling I saw with any birds was the very big birds, such as cockatoos. But those were only handled for 3 minutes at most then put back in their cage. Some cages were too small for the bird sizes. Needless to say we did not make a purchase from this over-priced and dishonest staff. We headed to Petsmart where my son was able to pick out his own bird, one that kisses and sits right on his finger.
My experience in "For the Birds" was the worst pet store experience ever. I am almost 40 years old and have been a pet/bird owner my whole life.
Great Place for Friendly Birds: We have been buying and looking at birds in this store for a couple of years. They ask us to bring in the cage to make sure the cage is appropiate for that type of bird.
The birds are so Great but you have to be patient. Most birds don't do well when people come at them too fast. Like people, birds respond to respect. The people that work there seems to be the same; if you interupt while they are with someone else or while they are in the middle of something, I have seen them wait until they are done to respond. Like many of us, in a busy environment that is very noisy with birds, it is hard to give your best to two things at once.
The birds we have from there are loving and friendly. The folks at this store are top-notch and they don't sell to people who won't take the time to be educated on a species of bird or who won't provide the bird with the proper living quarters.
I think it is Great when a company put the well-being of their birds ahead of making money!

I recently purchased a Cockatiel from Robin for my five year old son. I relied on Robin's expertise in helping my son pick his bird. She worked with my son and pointed out two birds that she felt were tame for his age range. My son settled on Mohawk, a very affectionate young female tiel. Towel training a bird (any bird) is a safe means of handling the animal especially when being seen by an avian vet or needing to be removed from an unsafe position such as a lighting fixture or my case the curtain rods. Honestly, I am grateful that the tiels I have purchased from Robin are already towel trained. Both our tiels are tame and affectionate. I have been going into For the Birds for many years now. I have always been impressed by how clean the store was. As for the toys, they are the same quality and comparable in price to the pet stores and other bird stores in town. The birds in the store are very well cared for. They are housed in adequately sized cages, which are clean. The birds are given clean fresh water and a high quality of feed. Robin is very passionate about her birds. When I have purchased birds from Robin I feel she is trusting me with a member of her family and not just making another sale. She wants to know about the home the bird is going to, what type of cage, and is it clean. I have seen her take the time to work with people who purchased birds from other stores. Robin is knowledgeable and always takes the time to answer my questions when I stop in the store. We are looking to expand our flock with a larger parrot and I know I will be relying on Robin. For the Birds is an invaluable resource. Perhaps you should give it another try.
