It all depends if you like eating like the Basques serve it up.

I've driven by the JT for years, but was never directed to it. Family style. Lots of meat. Bread, soup, beans, stew and the main course. The bread, salad, beans, soup and stew were endless. The tongue stew was delicious. I had the lamb shoulder steak and took half of it home. It was almost as good as any lamb I've eaten and I once had Basque lamb so tender and sweet it nearly melted in my mouth. But that was no restaurant lamb.
A member of our dinner group shared some of her basque chicken. A delicious melting breast marinated in magic sauce.
Service was excellent and attentive.
It was all finished by a serving of vanilla or mint chocolate chip ice cream.
The building is a Nevada original, beginning its life in Vriginia City and the COmstock Lode, moving three more times until it found its latest home in Gardnerville. Hats of all kinds, mostly beaver felt cowboy ones line the bar ceiling. Hundreds of people have found a way to tack dollar bills way up there too.
The men's room, next to the bighorn mount, has a shadow box of aspen bark and aspen tree pictures showing what young basque sheepherders were thinking about a century ago. It wasn't sheep. Speaking of art, the JT has a fascinating varioty all over the walls.
A 150 year old building housing a Sierra east slope restaurant in the western Basque tradition. If you eat meat and love the west, get there before vegetarianism forces it to close.
This restaurant was everything I was told it would be. From the atmosphere to the delicious food to the friendly and cordial staff. My last minute journey here from Reno was worth every mile traveled. My sincere thanks to Shawna(sp?)our waitress. I will definitely be returning here before heading back east.
Wonderful!!: Great Food, Great Fun, Great History
