My family and I have eaten at Mimi's several times. Be prepared to wait if eating around meal times, it always is crowded. The service always has been good. Our favorite food at Mimi's is the French Onion Soup.
Bad Fish: I've been a patron of MiMi's for five years now. Mostly in Colorado Springs. Since moving to Reno, I have only visited MiMi's once. Let me share this experience with you.
I always order the fish, slaw and fries. It's a great value and is usually a very good meal. This was my first time at the Reno location.
I decided to order this meal to go, as I was tired and hungry and wanted to relax with a great meal at home.
I called the restaurant 15min. prior to my arrival. Ordered the Fish meal and was told it would be $9.11.
Once I entered the Restaurant, I was greeted promptly, was escorted to the counter to pick up my meal. It was ready! No waiting! Great.
As the waitress/cashier handed me my bag, she asked for the $9.11, I handed her a $10.00 bill and she proceeded to ask me if I wanted the change back. Excuse me? Are you asking for a tip? I was taken aback and outraged that someone would solicit a tip so shamelessly. I said YES, I wanted my change back. I pocketed the change grabbed my bag from the counter and left.
Arriving at my house, I opened the plastic container of bread, the bread was sliced so thin, it crumbled in my hands. I set it aside. I opened the fish container and was greeted with a bitter smell. Reaching for a french-fry, it felt cold. I tasted it anyway, I was hungry after all. It had a bitter taste, was almost to the point of being frozen, and it was hard as a rock. It tasted bitter, burnt and it was hard to chew. I spit the fry out and went on to the fish. It as well had a bitter taste. Did they not change the oil? Was there some sort of cleaning solution in the deep-fryer? While the fish was bitter, it was still warm. I put aside the fries and fish and proceeded to eat the cole-slaw. I was leery to do so, but as usual it was tasty and very good.
So, I paid $9.11 for some cole slaw. I was pretty upset and wrote the Manager a letter, expressing my frustration with my take out meal. He apologized profusely, assured me he would talk to his staff about the tip issue and send me a certificate in the mail.
One week later I received the certificate, an apology letter and was invited to return with a reservation so they could oversee my meal and in-dining experience.
Stay tuned, and let's see how service and food turns out on my next visit. Keep in mind, I will not be telling them I am coming, but will pretend to be a first time guest.
WE LOVED IT!!: WE LOVED Mimi's cafe. Very impressed with the people and with the food. The service was excellent and the food was so much! We will be back for sure.
