About:At this fantastic and historic spot on Olvera Street , one can watch women practicing the dying art of making handmade tortillas. If you want just to purchase tortillas you can do so, but you might want to call ahead if you have a large order. There is also a cafeteria-style dining room and menu with delicious, authentic Mexican dishes. You won't want to miss this restaurant, especially if you are interested in Mexican culture in L.A. Only cash is accepted.

My rating is based specifically on the "FOOD" itself.

Carnitas are very tasty and the REAL thing. Handmade corn torillas made right there in front of you. Delicious rice and beans. Tasty guacamole (more liquid style)Homemade chips AND salsa (ordered as extra on the side)

The menu is limited- (there are like 9 options):
    2 soft tacos carnitas combo
1 soft taco and 1 tamale combo plate
    Chile relleno
    Beef stew tostada
    Carnitas plate
    Chicken with green sauce plate

NO CARNE ASADA - NO FLOUR TORTILLAS

You can get nopalitos (cactus), picadillo (ground beef & potato), carnitas, chicken in green sauce or beef stew (looked like chunk of beef with potato)

    Tip to first timers:
KNOW what you want BEFORE you get to the counter. They have no patience for anyone who doesn't know what they want or is slow or tries to "substitute" anything! Order by number and order in SPANISH! After you pay in CASH, wait for the older lady to take your tray and seat you and then TIP HER.

    Pros:
    Food is AUTHENTIC
    Food is tasty
    Food is fresh
    Bottled beer

    Cons:
    Cash only
    Parking in area runs $9.00
    Small portions
No air conditioning (glorified taco stand)
Rude staff who want you to speak only Spanish and order quickly or they will talk about you in Spanish.

They make a lot of money here, they want you in and out. You will feel rushed but the soft tacos are delicious. They are a homemade tortilla filled with carnitas. The styrofoam plate has rice and beans - that's it; nothing fancy but it is tasty.

    Cash only
    Beer is only alcohol served

Hands down, one of the greatest authentic Mexican meals in LA. The Fresh Horchata is amazing, the Carnitas are fantastic and people I know from all over the country demand a stop here just for the handmade tortillas. The Champurrado, Green Chile Enchiladas, Sweet Corn Tamales...on and on.... Clueless gringos beware, if you don't speak a lick of Spanish you may get overlooked so be prepared!

My mom and I went their for lunch and the server fogot to give us tortillas. When we realized it my mom went to ask and the server was rude and said no. I went to speak with the manager who gave me the tortillas but I made sure to tell him he has rude employees working for him. The food was not that great and the service was poor. I prefer the taco stands at Olvera Street - they are the best!
