R23 is hard to find, sandwiched in an alley between two buildings with some pretty impressive graffiti. I took my fiancee there for a birthday dinner and we loved how fresh the tuna, crab, and scallop sashimi was. And the spicy tuna had an extra kick that made my nostrils burn.. in a good way.
We sat at the sushi bar which was surprisingly empty for a Sat night. Most people chose to sit at tables. But we liked the vibe of the place, the sushi bar experience, and the sushi chefs who were very cool. We always like to share some Asahi and nigori sake shots with the chefs.
All in all, highly recommended for really fresh sushi and a cool hidden sushi experience downtown.
The best lunch I ever had while sitting on cardboard! LOL
I just finished lunch at R-23. The décor was beautiful, nested in the middle of an even more beautiful, high energy, arts district of Downtown Los Angeles. As I entered I could see three chefs at the sushi bar. I was greeted by who appeared to be the owner/manage. No sashimi for me today; Iâm keeping it really basic! I started with a nice fresh salad, followed by soup, fresh avocado roll, the finally was the fried shrimp with the sticky white rice! Everything was delicious from start to finish. Next time, I will try the infamous crab saladâ¦because there is sure to be a next time.
DownTown Tan
Well, I don't know where you guys get your SUSHI, but this restaurant has one of the freshest sushi I ever ate. I have been to many sushi bars, from Ktown to Westwood, to anywhere.....They have a great selection and it doesn't hurt to go there on the weekends, who knows you may bump into George Clooney.....
