Tokyo Japan or Little Tokyo LA for Japanese BBQ?: The closest place to find the real authentic taste of Japanese BBQ, without having to buy a plane ticket to Japan. This is the real deal, and the only place in Los Angeles for it.
I used to live in Japan for 2 years, and i know the true BBQ flavour very well.
I LOVE BBQ. End of Story....
....from Phillips on Crenshaw (Lamert) to Soot Bull Jeep (Korean) on 8th in L.A.
THIS is where you need to be for an unforgettable flavour experience, Japanese Style!!!!
.....or you can go sit on a plane for 11 hours, go thru customs, hail a taxi and end up in the heart of Harajuku. Thats fun too.....but
I recommend the simple drive. :)
Expect to bring about $60 - $80 bucks for two, without spending tooo much on alcohol. Sake is great, order it cold, hot sake is for tourists.
I spend alittle over $100 bucks for two, and believe me, i have no problem spending the cash with my taste bud satisfactions smiling after every meal.
Waiters DO speak English,(in response to teabulletin's review)
thats why the workers came here, to live and to share the tradition of great food, so dont act a misfired zygote of a customer.
This is a taste bud time machine, so bring your I Speak Japanese Pocket Book if you have doubts, M.Z.
Also expect to wait abit for certain BBQ items. Its worth the wait. So sit and enjoy the process. Order the Kaori, Asparagus Wrapped in Thin Pork, and the Grilled Onigiri. You'll be all smiles, promise. :)
They're closed on Mondays, (damnit) i wanted to go today. :( Have a lunch and dinner option throughout the week.
Park in the Weller Court Underground Parking area, or right there on 2nd.

Good Atmoshphere: Excellent experience for people culturally aware of japanese BBQ. Good sake list and some unique deserts (e.g. Coffee Jello). The only bad thing is that food is brought to the table in the order the skewers ordererd. Usually vegetables, then protein, then more vegetables. Can take awhile to get all your food. Still good though. Expect 50-75 dollar bill & tip for two people for an excellent meal.
Like being transported to Tokyo--spectacular!: You will think you've been transported to Tokyo when you step through the noren into cozy Koshiji, one of the premiere authentic yet unpretentious dining spots in Little Tokyo. As at a comparable Japanese establishment, the quality of the ingredients is impeccable, preparation meticulous, and the meal is first rate. Yakitori means grilled chicken, but the menu is fleshed out with equally tempting skewered vegetables, lambchops, and other items that particularly lend themselves to grilling treatment, as well as a few rice dishes. There are usually specials, too, which the non-English-speaking waiters obligingly pantomime (the last time I was there the specials included skewered chicken tails or chicken hearts). The presentation on bamboo skewers facilitates sharing. Pair your meal with Japanese beer to complete the experience. Prices are moderate, although not rock bottom--the food and ambience are too good for that. A bit hard to find, as it is on the second floor of Weller Court, behind the New Otani. If you love authentic Japanese food and want to go beyond the usual sushi don't miss Koshiji!
