The flavor is spot on delicious. Beer. Sake. Sashimi. Great tempura. Sushi, but no sushi bar staff. Authentic Little Tokyo ambience. Large menu. Take out available. Excellent service.
I call it "Church": 28 years of love, laughs, friendship and fabulous food. But those post-lunch/pre-supper closings are at 2 PM, not 2 AM. I bet lovable Grace has never been awake at 2 AM in her life. Well, maybe if there was a baby crying. This is the opposite of a pretentious sushi bar full of posers. Can't beat it when you feel like part of the family. They call me "Cay-san".
Aoi: Great Japanese Food: My wife and I have eaten at Aoi regularly for the past 6 years, since we moved to LA. It's a small, family-run place with a typically dumpy Little Tokyo interior - but loads of charm due to the friendly staff and GREAT food. Top recommendations: tempura (best anywhere!), gyoza, spinach appetizer, sake chazuki (green tea broth soup with salmon and rice). Don't go for the sushi, though they have a few offerings that are fine.
