Unfortunately, this is not the place to go for good Moroccan food. It might have been once (when I first ate here about twenty years ago) but it is now past its prime.

The restaurant itself is dirty and dingy. Music loud and cheesy and the belly dancers look like grandmothers. But that's not what you come for. Is it?

The food, too, resembles the restaurant itself: old, tired and in need of repair and attention. The chicken was undercooked and had to be sent back as blood squirted out when we picked at it. The cous cous, was bland and the bastilla just "sat there." We finished the meal with a dessert that was supposed to be a sweet cake but reminded me instead of a semi-sweet sandpaper-like substance. The tea was just O.K.

    The price? $28.00 p.p. What a ripoff!!

I'd try someplace else if you want good Moroccan food because this isn't it!!

A friend and I tried Moun of Tunis after reading the positive web reviews featured during my web search. The establishment was beautifully decorated and the staff was knowledgeable and friendly. I'm sad to say that we were highly disappointed with the food.

Hand washing: The server didn't pour enough water on my hands to feel like they were clean. I washed them before hand.

First course: Olives and Pita The Olives were the basic table variety, tasty but not what I expected. The Pita wedges were a bit burned and dry.
The Salads were nice and refreshing. We enjoyed the Cucumber & Tomato salad, as well as the Pickled Carrots and the Eggplant. We were not thrilled with the Sweet Carrots which were heavily doused with Rose Water. The bread was very dry and crumbled while breaking it to dip the salads with.

Second Course: Brik. Brik is a sort of fried turnover stuffed with Poached Egg, Potatoes and Capers, served with a side of Harisa, a spicy chili paste. This was hands-down our favorite course, even-though my egg was fully cooked. My friends egg was perfectly poached.

Third Course: B'Stilla. The B'Stilla was the biggest disappointment of the evening. It smelled wonderful and we were eager to taste the cinnamon and spices mingled with the sweet chicken and almonds. The chicken was dry and somewhat flavorless. The server stated that it didn't have almonds for the sake of people with food allergies. We used the harisa in order to make it taste better.

Fourth Course: Lamb with Artichokes and Couscous with Vegetables: The Lamb was nicely cooked, tender flavorful, however, it tasted like a something that I could easily duplicate at home. The couscous was tasty and the vegetables were cooked well.

Dessert Course: Almond Cake and Mint Tea. I suppose food allergies are not a concern during the dessert course. The cake was soaked in some type of syrup which made the texture taste like you were biting a wet sponge. The Green Tea with Mint Leaves was refreshing and not too sweet, as some can be overpowering.

We ended the evening with the Belly-dancing show which is always entertaining.

Moun of Tunis is a place for good Moroccan food. However, if you want GREAT Moroccan food take a day trip to Santa Barbara and try Chef Karim's Moroccan Restaurant
