The setting next to the SM airport was beautiful and romantic. BUT, the prices and quality of the food were HORRIBLE. I've dined in Tokyo, Osaka, New York, San Fran and L.A.... the Hump's prices are similar to those in Japan (appetizers only $100). But, Santa Monica is NOT downtown Tokyo, and the food in The Hump did not fair well, especially for L.A. standards. (sashimi was fair, but portions were insignificant; cooked dishes were either greasy or overly seasoned...too much salt... Yuck!...some dishes were ruined. Who was cooking this!?) I felt horribly scammed and cheated by the whole experience. Worse, after spending a fortune there, WE WERE STILL HUNGRY!! In fact, our party left The Hump and went straight to Josie's on Pico to wash out the bad experience.
My opinion is that The Hump is THE WORST, MOST OVERPRICED restaurant not only in Santa Monica, but in All of So Cal.
DO NOT go to The Hump... IT'S A TOURIST TRAP.
Good food, BUT WAY, WAY, WAY overpriced! A week before we went to Nobu Malibu and for the same price we had almost twice as much food. And let me tell you Nobu has actually better quality food. I have been to a lot of expensive places in LA and Manhattan, but prices here are simply retarded. No airport or view is worth it. Sorry, but i am just not going to be a sucker!
Incredible Restaurant for the Rich: The ambience
PROS- was the most extrodinary part of the restaurant. It is located RIGHT NEXT to the private airport of Santa Monica. If you sit to the window or even outside, you will have a nice view of the planes taking off and landing. The place is decorated so it is not too way too formal but it gives you a warming dark feeling.
CONS- This is no place for a teenaged hang out. If you are a teenager and you go there, you will feel misplaced. Most people that goes there are at least in their late 20's all the way to seniors. Also, it is really hard to locate if you do not use a gps system or internet map. Very private place.
The Food
PRO- Overall, the food is amazing. If you are a sushi eater, you will immediately notice the difference. You can feel the super fresh sashime melt on your tongue. They also contain many traditional japanese appetizers.
CON- The menu is not descriptive enough, if you never ordered sushi before, you will have to go through 30 minutes just asking about what is what. Also, the quanitity is too little to satisfy.
The Service
PRO- Incredibily nice and tries really hard to be of best service. We ordered squid and we never recieved it. Later on, we asked and it was on the plate that we said that we didnt want. We accidently thought it was white carrots. Without asking, the waiter went to the chef and the chef made an extra order free of charge.
Cons- The waiters are really hard to understand especially when you ask them to explain because of their Japanese Accents. They arent prepared to give a description of anything.
The Value
PROS- I think the value is very fair. You have to think about the restaurant and the customers. Besides just food for the money, you have to think about the ambience/location, it is located in a really private area, the service of the chef and waiters. If you add all those together, i think this is really worth it.
Cons - A dinner for two will cost AT LEAST $100. This is no place if you have a budget. Very pricey but worth it.
