This is a beautiful location. You can site on the patio and look down upon Avalon. In the summer I would book an ocean view room as the mountain view rooms are very warm. The beds are hard and pillows not comfortable. I did find a roach in my bag when I got home. I do not know if it was from the motel or the ferry...
It is a long hike up, but if you don't mind walking you can get there in 15 minutes. It is a short walk down to town. You can catch a shuttle from the center of town at 8,9,10,3,5 and 6 and also from the hotel. At the hotel, you must call first. We had a group of 5, so it was not too bad if you had to get a taxi. If you do need to call a taxi and there are only two of you, you may want to coordinate with other ZGP guests and say you are together, otherwise you will be charged as two fares.
The pool is ice cold, but refreshing on a hot day. It is nice that you can keep food and drinks in the outside fridge. I would not recommend this hotel for people who: can not walk up and down stairs (there is no elevator and MANY stairs) with no assistance from the staff, want to party (it is quiet), want lux accommodations (stay at the Metropolitan in town instead), want a large room, have small children or pre-teens as the owner prefers adults.
I would recommend this to people who: enjoy getting away from the crowds and noise in town, like to relax with a view, want to make their own meals and drinks, like to hike (there is a great hike near the ZGH), on a budget and free spirits. Overall it was a fun place to stay and I will stay there again.
