gi-normous portions: bring a huge appetite when you come to catalina cantina because they serve portions fit for the jolly green giant. the ambience is lively and service is reasonably good. if you get a chance, sit at the tables facing the street to maximize on people watching and the view of the bay is there for the taking. we ordered nachos with pork and i had the guava margarita which had just about the right amount of frou-frouiness to it.
Catalina Cantina is good eats!: Every time I go to the Island I have to make a pilgrimage to the Catalina Caantina. Their portions are huge, the service is friendly, and the atmosphere is just what you'd expect in a harbor town. Sportfishing memorabilia is everywhere, and the mural of Avalon is cool. While you're there, start with the Cantina Wings. Tasty. Move on to the Island Burrito and you can't go wrong. Deeeelish!
Mexican food from my high school cafeteria: The food was pretty bad. I gave 2 stars because it was at least prepared well, it's just that what they prepared was the lousy American fast-food version of Mexican food. I had an $8 tostada that looked the same as a Taco Bell taco salad and actually tasted worse. One of my companions had a soft taco plate - marginally better than mine, but both of our dishes had tons of chopped iceberg lettuce and very little in the way of spices or sauces. My other companion had a quesadilla which actually looked good - probably because you can't stuff it full of chopped lettuce. I rate this stuff as "cafeteria" food, because it really tastes like stuff you'd get from some food service vendor at a ball park or a high school.
