I couldn't help but notice this small bakery every time I drove to Jack in the Box's on Lake, one block north. One lazy Saturday morning I talked my wife into letting me pick up some muffins there for breakfast. As I walked in, I noticed that the place was sparsely decorated. I didn't mind, but I knew that it would turn off some people. I ordered a couple of muffins and turnovers from the gentleman behind the counter whom I assumed was the owner. When I went to pay for the food, I was embarrassed to find that I was one or two dollars shy of the total. I asked if I could pay with a credit card.
"We take cash, checks and food stamps," he said.
I think that I gave him a bit of a look then, being that I find that it's rare to find a business nowadays that doesn't take credit cards. I knew there was an ATM a block away, so I humbly apologized and told him I would quickly return.
"That's all right," he said, stopping me and handing me the box with the goods. "You'll pay me when you get it."
I think my jaw must have hit the floor then.
"Are you sure?" I asked.
"Absolutely...come back when you have the money."
I then took the six or seven dollars that had and tried to give it to him, but he pushed my hand away.
I took the box, got in my car and went to the ATM. I then returned and paid him.
"That was fast," he said, smiling.
When I got back home I told my wife the story, and we both commented upon how unusual it is to find people like that anymore.
The muffins and turnovers were very good, but what really impressed me obviously was that one encounter. I've since gone back again and again. Most of the time I've dealt with the same gentleman, who I think doesn't remember me. The other day I went in and a younger guy served me. I think it was his son. We talked a little bit...a very nice guy.
Highly recommended. Good food. Nice people. What else could you ask for?
