The sushi is pretty good. But the service is very bad. It's slow, and no one will ever come around and see how your doing or if you need anything.
I hesitated to post a negative review about OsakaYa because it is a local business. However, what happened last night really outraged me. My family consisting of 5 adults, 1-10 year old, 1- 6 year old and a baby had dinner at the restaurant last night. As usual, the service was nonexistent and we waited a very long time to eat our mediocre food. The sense that we were screwed came when we got the bill. We were charged an 18% mandatory gratuity fee based on that we were a party of "8". We were told that the baby counted towards the total number of people in our party so that's why the tip is added. Then when we questioned it, the waitress lied and said, "well actually it's party of 7 or more". We asked her to show it to us in the menu or in writing somewhere and she ignored us and walked away. With that, I vowed to share with others, our experience the past few years with OsakaYa. My family has patronized OsakaYa since it was first opened. Even after the murder of the last owner, we continued to go to the restaurant to support its business. The past 2 years, the food and service have become pretty disappointing. First the food review. The portions have gotten noticeably smaller. Sashim that used to come with 3 of each type of fish now only comes with 2 small emaciated and not always the most fresh of fish. Udon is overcooked. Ramen is like instant noodle. Bento is a joke. If you order anything fried like the katsu, it is underbreaded and over fried. It tastes harder than jerkey. Same goes for the terriyaki chicken or salmon. Most of the rolls are pretty tasteless as the fish is mostly not fresh. The softshell crabs are smaller than they typically are and overly fried to an oily crisp. As for the service, it doesn't get much better. During the most busiest times, there is only one sushi chef-the korean owner and only one waitress. Most times, the waitress looks at you as if you are inconveniencing her or she is dumb, deaf and mute. Either way, you won't get what you've asked or you will need to keep asking until you get what you want. When my family goes, we always prepare ourselves for a long wait to be seated and an even longer wait to be served. Folks, don't eat at Osaka Ya. Many times I have had food poisoning from their sushi. Try to find another fake Japanese restaurant. Surely Pasadena has something better.
