On vacation from Phoenix with the parents. They were in the mood for Chinese minus the San Diego Downtown prices. First thing I did was browse Yahoo Local and it was Golden Chopsticks with the best ratings and reviews. So why not? Prices sound reasonable and it wasn’t in the heart of San Diego. A 10 minute drive from our hotel off Hotel Circle Drive, and we arrive at Golden Chopsticks where it is situated in a large parking lot surrounded by other Asian restaurants and services. Upon entering we noticed that the place is packed! That’s good. I took a closer look at the faces, and all patrons of Asian descent! So I knew this had to be some real Chinese food! You can say I was excited, since the Chinese cuisine in Phoenix is pretty bad. We were welcomed and they sat us down right away. The waiter rushed us on our order and I felt he was being rude a bit. Appetizers came out and boy everything was a dream. Egg rolls, WHOA! Steamed dumplings, TO DIE FOR! Wonton soup, a little on the broth side but the contents were D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U-S. Mountain of Calamari, never seen so many on one plate! Now a warning with the Calamari if you are with people who expect to have red sauce as a dip, like my mother. She was having a hard time understanding that this isn't an Italian restaurant, but some dipping sauce would have been nice to have to be honest. For the main meal I ordered Sweet and Sour Chicken, and my parents decided to split a plate glancing over the size of everyone's' main meals. So my parents ordered some type of Fried Noodle dish. Now, as we are still eating our appetizers of epic proportions the main meals hit the table! We are not even half way through with the appetizers! They just threw it on our table as we were eating. A little awkward on the timing. Our waiter then goes by every table in the restaurant to ask "How is everything??" but ours. I don't know if it's because we weren't Asian, but we found this to be extremely rude. On numerous occasions he asked others how everything was, and we were just ignored. Refills on the drinks came out slow with the small glasses they provide (shot glasses?). Other than that, my Sweet and Sour Chicken was great, very tender, not over sauced, just perfect. You have to pay for white rice which we found a little odd, because you would expect it to be included with the dish. My parent's main meal on the other hand looked like a plate full of those Ramen noodles with some slop on top. This made my parents disgusted. My father peaked under the fried noodles (Ramen) and discovered this sauce that looked like snot. I can only blame my parents on their part because they had no clue what they were getting themselves into. I am sure someone who knew about this dish would have loved it. Overall the bill was like $44, anywhere else it would have been $60-70... EASY! I give this 4 stars because the service was real bad, the food on the other hand was superb! We felt left out and disrespected and reason I deducted a star. My mother was furious over the whole ordeal. She was upset that I even recommended this place for us to eat on our vacation. Sigh... Italian mothers. She defiantly provided some memories that will last forever by eating in this place through her reactions. I would defiantly go back to Golden Chopsticks next time I visit San Diego, hopefully their service will brighten up!
