My girlfriend and I visited San Diego this past weekend. Since neither of us had been there previously, we had a few "must see" attractions. The Zoo and the Wild Animal Park topped the list. While the Zoo was good, I thought the Wild Animal Park was much better. The large open range exhibits are a much more pleasing way to see animals than the smaller exhibits most zoos must use. You get to see much more natural interactions between animals of different species in the Wild Animal Park. Where else can you see a giraffe licking the head of a cape buffalo?! Of course, if you're wanting to take photos, you need a good camera with lots of zoom capability, which may be a downer for some people. The only exhibit downside I recall is the lion camp. Unless the lions are on high ground, the only way to see them is through glass. While that gave us a chance to be right next them (a lioness was laying on a box looking through the glass at all us crazy humans and the male was napping on the ledge at the other window), it didn't make for the best photo taking opportunities. The Journey through Africa tram ride (included in the Best Value ticket) provides a nice narrated tour of the park with some photo opportunity stops. We didn't pay extra to do any of the photo caravan tours, which take you in a little closer to the exhibits, or the hot air balloon ride (which was closed due to weather conditions).
Simply put, the only time you will ever see any of these animals in a more natural, and consequently for them, relaxed, atmosphere is if you were to happen upon them while camping in Africa. Shows abound for those who wish to sit and rest, as well as various benches, chairs, blah, blah, blah. The stars here are the critters, and the enclosures are so well designed at times that you can't tell where they begin, save the walkway veering off to the side. I'm from SD, so I'm a wee biased, nut I have managed to visit other zoos across the country on my travels, and nothing even comes close to comparing to the SD's Zoo, or especially it's Wild Animal Park. Be there, or be... somewhere else. Just not as cool.
I live in San Diego and have been to the WAP many times. "The Zoo" is the San Diego Zoo which is waaaaaay further south than the Wild Animal Park and much smaller. I highly recommend taking the time to drive out to the Wild Animal Park as it is much bigger and more interesting, just wear comfortable shoes and bring a light jacket for the long safari ride inside. Throwing in a binocular wouldn't hurt either. There are some interesting animal shows and the variety of animals is amazing. Plan on spending most of the day here as there is a lot of ground to cover. It's a very unique experience. The SD Zoo was disappointing for me because the "main attraction" animals were no shows but there's plenty to do at Balboa Park instead :)
