Wow! What a treat this place was. We saw it previewed on Food Network's Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives and decided to see if it was for real. It is and the food and service were beyond reproach. We have two more days here in San Diego and I guarantee we will return. Food is prepared fresh and portions are huge. The chicken and dumplings are like my mothers and the chicken actually tastes like chicken. The prime rib was tender without being mushy and flavorful without excessive saltiness or other off putting flavors. Being kind of a prime rib fan I'd give it a 9.5 on a scale of 10.
What a disappointment. We went to try this place after it appeared on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. We arrived around noon on a weekday. There is no parking. We had to park almost 2 blocks away and pay a meter. No big deal. Our waitress informed us, that we needed to turn off our cell phones before ordering...weird. We ordered, nothing special, two sandwiches, both were $12 each. A little high for a lunch sandwich, but we thought "surely its going to be great." After waiting 55 minutes for an egg salad sandwich and a patty melt, I had to run down the street to add more money to the meter. Our food arrived at 1 hour, so lucky for me it was waiting for me to get back. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't great.
The place does have an ambiance but not really sure it was worth $30+ for a sandwich lunch.
There is a magic at Hob Nob Hill that transforms the typical hyped and pretentious downtown restaurant vibe into a welcoming environment where Sunday formally dressed seniors -- and those of us who wear shorts for every occasion -- come together and enjoy a classy, delicious, wonderful breakfast -- all for a reasonable price (bfast for 2, with all extras, for under $25) with reservations accepted.
The uniformed staff, always attentive for 60 years, watches over every need. I have found this restaurant and staff a welcome antidote to the tattoo poisoned indifference (see sushi deli, hash house a-gag-gag) of the trendy local eateries.

weird that they dont want the place full of people talking on cell phones or weird that you dont know thats considered "rude"?
