| About: | The Ghio family started out as fishermen plying the San Diego waters. In the late 1940s, clan matriarch Mama Ghio opened a small seafood diner called the Anthony's Fish Grotto. Her restaurants have been wildly successful for years, and though she's no longer overseeing them, her spirit lives on. At this venue, the long glassed-in dining room offers great views of San Diego Bay. On the menu, you will find fresh fish of all descriptions, changing daily. No meal is complete without a bowl of Mama Ghio's red clam chowder. |

Really outstanding location and view. Good food. I ate there one evening and was satisfied so I went back for lunch trhe next day. The dinner was great. The lunch was mediocre. The service was surly but fast. The halibut is a great catch. Chowder is better than average. Squid sandwich should go back in the ocean.
I ate here the night before my one year wedding anniversary. I went to college in SD and was looking forward to going back to a restaurant I once loved. What a terrible mistake. The place has definitely taken a turn for the worst. The carpet were dirty and smelled awful. My husband had pasta that was drenched in sauce, there was barely any pasta. I unfortunately order the steak and crab legs. The steak was so tough I could barely cut a piece off and after trying the crab legs I realized that the first one had definitely gone bad. I should have been leary of our food being presented to our table too quickly after ordering. I tried to salvage part of another crab leg. I should not have. After leaving 90 percent of our meals untouched we left. I didn't eat anything else that evening and after two hours I began to endure the worst food poisoning I have ever experienced. I will never eat there again!
I've got to admit it is a great view of the bay but that's about all. The food is mediocre to subpar at best. At $10.99 for crab cakes, shall I say crab cake it is overpriced. My wife and I went down to Sea World and Anthony's was recommended so I headed down to the bay to check it out. We ordered the Mahi Mahi and it was probably the worst we've had. Along with the crab cake and Mahi Mahi, we also ordered a Teriyaki Steak which was actually good but the accompanying Lobster tail could of been better, the baked potato was overcooked and the salad was drenched with balsamic vingarette; it was the worst $85 I spent. The only thing I can give a positive comment on is besides the steak, the Cabernet Sauvignon was not bad (Avoid the house Cabernet.)I should have trusted my instincts and headed down to Old town San Diego. Avoid this overpriced place and save your money.
