My wife & I both love Masuo's, we'd go there at least once a week if we could fit it in. They have a lot of great, original, specialty rolls. The ambiance is very low-key and the food is always delicious. In a town with a lot of great sushi restaurants, Masuo's stands out as a place that's just a little different.
my favorite north county local sushi: This sushi restaurant is hidden amongst the local coast highway shops on the 101 in solana beach. With little advertising, Masuos is a favorite amongst the locals and the regulars who were lucky enough to discover their sushi.
The ambience at Masuos is divided. The front room gives off a cozy vibe with close tables almost always packed to the max, with artwork accenting all walls by a local talent Grant Pecoff. If you make it past the sushi chefs and into the back, often times, unbeknowest to even some of the most regulars of regulars, you can be seated on the patio or in the very eclectic back room, where couches, a big screen TV and a variety of unmatching tables and chairs make of this very chill ambience... all of which makes the great ingredients for a private party-This room can be rented out, as we often see various large groups of people enjoying the entire back room as thier own.
Now to the food. We have been eating there for years and the menu just gets better and better. Be prepared to spend some time reading the menu, which is basically a book. There are pages and pages of fun and different sushi rolls and if any of these don't suit you, the chefs have always been more than happy to create whatever I'm in the mood for. Being a sushi restaurant, I'd stay away from any of the chicken or beef entrees.
Some of my favorites, are the James roll, a shrimp tempura with albacore and avocado on top, the Blake roll, Jaysen roll, Buster and Donks... but you really can't go wrong with whatever you order. The bluefin has always been excellent and you can't go wrong with the tuna tartar or poki.
Masuos only carries beer, wine and sake, with the beer selection probably being the weakest. Kirin, sapporo and Asahi, being the only Japanese beers carried, then a couple of very similar beers on tap, most of the time, which are out. The wine selection is decent and there is some variety within the cold sake, but nothing too exciting that stands out.
The service at Masuos is fine. Its small and low key so the girls all work hard to service their tables. They are friendly, down to earth and are true southern cali girls, that fit in perfect to the Masuos vibe. Be prepared to wait to get your water refilled, though, and we've found that you may need to give a reminder or two about your drinks or sushi-just due to a slightly understaffed restaurant with an ever increasing crowd. Truly, worth the occasional wait or frustration-you get the character and vibe of a fun but excellent sushi restaraunt without the "we are too good for you vibe" of Nobu or Samarai, or the annoying, super busy "we've got way better things to do than serve you at our crazy busy, crammed in, filled with 20 year olds getting wasted on sake(and our rolls have too much rice)" vibe of Station Sushi.
I think you'll like Masuo's.
