The word "Hodad" is a slang term used to describe a surfer "wanna-be." A hodad may own a surfboard and may even haul that board to the beach, yet never actually surfs. This joint has character, surfing character, with surfing memorabilia covering the walls and a jukebox playing appropriate tunes. Guests experience a surf dream world at this Ocean Beach establishment. For an extra treat, try sitting in the booth constructed from the front of a VW bus. Now THIS is Southern California!
We waite about 45 minutes in line to be seated during the noon hour on a Saturday. Locals walked by and commented about how the food wasn't all that great, but we had invested too much time into the "line" to go somewhere else. Good thing too, because it was fantastic. The service was great considering how busy it was. Ordered bacon cheeseburgers, fries, onion rings and malts. They brought drinks quickly and the food followed shortly after. Malts and shakes were some of the best I've had and the food was high quality, highly flavorful and large quantity. Also, high in fat and calories, but who counts when you're on vacation. Take a walk out to the end of the pier and watch the surfers, that will burn at least 100 calories. I don't know where the locals eat, but if they have a place better than this for burgers, it must be something.
I get a large hamburger with everything on it, onion rings and a chocolate milkshake...you will not need to eat again in the same day!
Everything is very very good, however it can get very busy at times and there can be a slight wait...if the line goes outside, and you are very hungry, maybe go to another spot. If you can wait, it will be worth it!
Like many small businesses I have seen that have an excellent product, they are very busy so it can feel like they are not giving good customer service! I don't believe they intend this, it is just what happens in a successful small business! I think people should be happy they are getting very good food and talk to their mothers if they want someone to coddle them...that is my opinion.
I take 1 star away not by their fault, but because I drive kinda far to get a hamburger there and can get very hungry...when I see the line and the possible wait, that is not so good for me!

I think that the line itself was your best indicator of the quality...ate there myself over 10 years ago and it was great then!
