Tio Carlos, this lively and friendly Mexican restaurant has to work hard to overcome an odd location on top of an older motel and next to a busy street, but once visitors find it they come back time and again. The traditional complimentary chips and salsa are so good that you must remind yourself to save room for the entree. Combination plates are popular, such as the Shredded-Beef Taco Plate or the Chicken Enchilada Plate. A full bar is available; try a Margarita or one of the numerous brands of Mexican beer.
I was just reading the reviews and surprised to read even that one bad one because I eat there all the time and have never had bad food. I am 100% mexican and the food at Tio Carlos is VERY authentic. They also have healthy + Vegitarian options like frijoles de la hoya instead of refried beans if you are watching your weight. Fajitas are amazing!!!! Lobster Puerto Nuevo style is well worth the wait!!! Instead of driving to Puerto Nuevo drive to PL. Drinks are always strong and super yummy!!! Complimentary chips and salsa better than any other place!! Service was great. the building is old but that's never stopped me. Plus they have a great terrace if you want to RSVP for a party out there AND you can order MARGARITAs by the pitcher! :)
I was excited to eat here after I read a review from a Mexican patron who said the food was authentic. We went for breakfast on a Sunday morning and it was etremely uninspired to say the least. Entering the stairwell we were hit with the sharp aroma of mold and mildew, hardly the odors that should be emanating from your favorite eatery. The waitress was very nice and we started with standard chips and salsa nothing special. My husband ordered some fresh guacamole which ended up being very bland and not so fresh. When our Chilaquilles arrived I was so excited my mouth was watering. The only positive thing I can say is that it was a generous portion but of WHAT I have no idea. Sloppy, soggy tortilla chips drenched in a tasteless, watery tomato sauce. WTF? On what planet is this considered "authentic" Mexican cuisine? Where are the spices and flavors--was the white guy cooking that morning? It seemed like a toned down version of tourist Mexican food where nothing has any heat or flavor and they compensate with lots of cheese and sour cream...bleah! This place can't even compete with Santana's and we won't be returning anytime soon.
Best Mexican resturant ever! Don't be decieved by the location, the food is amazing and worth a visit. I've had the chimichangas, chile relleno, nachos, lobster, carne asada, and the many great drinks they serve. Everytime I go the food is consistently great and the sauce they serve over the chimichangas and nachos is unbelievalbly, mouth watering, GREAT. Go see for yourself - you won't be disappointed.
