El Gallito Restaurant

This is the best Mexican restaurant period. I used to live in the desert and dined there frequently. Now I live in LA and will visit the desert just to eat there. Their salsa is the best. And do yourself a favor and try the Burrito Especial.

I agree with the person who finds the place a bit scary. I also agree that with his observation that New York has the "Soup Nazi"...Cathedral City has the "Burrito Fascist"!!! I've never seen more rules in a restaurant..ever. If you think you can linger over the menu while enjoying some chips and salsa and a cold beer, not here. They will not bring you chips or a beer, or anything until you've actually placed your order...This "rule" is one of many, and is plastered everywhere including at every table. It gives you the feeling that you are not to be trusted with a few chips and a beer..that somehow you have a master plan to cheat them out of a few chips!!!They will not take anything but cash, thereby contributing to the sense that you are not to be trusted. If you want to eat there and were hoping to use your credit or debit card, no luck, you have to go to their ATM, which they have at the entrance and pay $2.75 to get cash!!!. No splitting dishes...only one bill per table..the rules go on and on...and all these rules are placed in and around the restaurant, on your table, in the menu..Folks this is a bizarre place. The food is just barely alright and the service, as you can well imagine...very unfriendly. This is the type of place that they believe that they are doing you a favor by letting you eat there...do yourself a favor and don't. There are far too many fine restaurants in the area to put up with this type of arrogance and weirdness!!!

I used to live in Cathedral City and El Gallito was my favorite restaurant in the area -better than "Las Cazuelas". Their pork in chile verde is my favorite dish and every time I visit the PS area I always go there for dinner. It can be crowded at lunch and dinner time but the wait is worth. I don't know why someone complained about the staff, everytime I've been there waitresses are always friendly and bring their home-made tortilla chips with delicious salsa even if we don't ask for them.
