About:Nestled in the heart of downtown Palm Springs, Pomme Frite has attracted a serious following of food aficionados since it opened in 1999 thanks to its simplicity and by consistently serving superior cuisine with pride but without European pomp. This quaint and cozy bistro features Belgian specialties, including mouth-watering steamed black mussels prepared eight different ways, Flemish style beef stew (simmered in Belgian beer) accompanied by fresh cut and crispy Pommes Frites and homemade dipping sauces.. A wide selection of Belgian beers, French and California wines is also available to whet your palette. Topped off with a Belgian chocolate mousse on a bed of vanilla creme Anglaise for dessert, it simply doesn't get any better than this. The charming old-world patio is perfect for street and people watching on Palm Canyon Drive, and the dreamy French music insures a relaxing and romantic dining experience.

Let me start out by saying I NEVER write reviews of my dining experiences and this is my 1st time ever doing so but feel compelled to warn other customers of possible fraud involved at this restaurant.

It was my 2nd visit to Pomme Frite that has caused me to give the restaurant 1 star.

The food was good, and the restaurant was extremely slow so I felt bad for the waitress. At the end of our meal I paid my bill with my debit card and tipped the waitress a little over 20% in cash. Whenever I tip in cash but pay my bill with debit card I make sure to write on the receipt under "tip" $0 with (cash) next to it so they know they weren't stiffed.

Several days go by and I discover on my online bank statement that the restaurant charged me an additional $10 on my transaction that I did not authorize. Either the waitress wrote in an extra tip or the owner/manager felt like charging me extra. I called the owner to resolve the manner and left a voicemail......no return call....I call the next day and I got him on the phone, his response...."well I don't know what I can do about it, let me call you back tomorrow".....still have not heard from him but my bank investigated and gave me back my money.

Lesson is......if you take the risk of eating here either pay all in cash or watch out for a fraudulent charge after you leave.

Superb Food, Service Slipping: We have been going to this Bistro for about 3 years and love the food. It is first class fare (far better than some of the other more expensive restaurants in town). The interior is small but cozy and intimate. The patio is lovely with the exception of the fact that smoking is allowed (I thought it wasn't in California). What has slipped of late is the service. If you have the misfortune of being seated in the section tended by a waiter who is a Jack Palance look alike, ask to move. This man was the most intrusive, boorish and eccentric waiter we have ever encountered. Another let down, the last time we were there, the owner served us a bottle of Chardonnay that had not even been chilled, which (given the price) was totally unacceptable. We felt just like another tourist being milked (even though we live here).
