I must must have been there on a bad night. Sal's was recommended to me by a co-worker, as I just recently relocated from Long Beach.
Food seemed far from authentic on any level, from cal-mex, to the real deal. This place reminded me of somewhere Kevin Arnold's family would have went in the wonder years.
Now like I said earlier it might have been just a bad night, but isn't that how everything should be graded?
I love you Sal. I have to admit, after reading the other reviews I though maybe it was a scam. How can everyone love this place so much? I'm a sceptic.
Walking in, I immediately felt welcome and safe. I know, its a restarurant not a nursing home, but that's what i felt. The white walls were spotless, the floors clean, nice artwork and a friendly greater. Impressive.
People watching in the back room was excellent. Gotta love that about the area.
The menu (also clean, why is this so tough?) was awesome. Everything you expect from a Mexican restaurant with some great specialities to keep you thinking. The chips and salsa (complementary) were both fresh. They served a fresh tomato salsa and a hot one next to it. I had the best results mixing the two, and requested a refill of both.
L ordered chicken fajitas ($14) and I order a big burito al pastor plate ($13). Both standard items since it was our first visit and we did not want to stray too far from what we know. When the food arrived (filling the four top table!) we didn't know where to start. Wow! The chicken fajita was cooked perfectly, not over done and tough like other's often do. Seasoning was also perfect and it wasn't even overly greasy. Sal, your a genious.
The big burito al pastor was equally incredible. I'd love to have that al pastor recipe, but then I know I'd still make Sal make it for me. Inside the burito were the standard rice, bean, sour cream, guac etc. Even L commented on how they got the ratio just right. Not too much rice, not overpowering sour cream, just right. Both dinners came with ample sides of rice and beans.
If you haven't been to Sal's yet turn off the computer now and go live a little. I'm so happy right now - and full!
Family Restaurant: My mother has been taking me here since I was a child. I highly recommend it.
