Great Food! People who are used to homemade Mexican food will love it. People who like big chain restaurants whose main ingredient is salt and cardboard, will hate it. You have to appreciate good food to love the mom and pop restaurants in Bakersfield. Otherwise, go to el torito.
This place is HORRIBLE. I can't believe some of the reviews I just read. Then again if you have been going somewhere for over 10 years...that can explain that your taste buds have become immune to the awful food they serve. Our waiteress only came twice...to take our order and then again to drop it off. The food tasted like it was nuked in a microwave. If I took my parents there they would say that I've lost my marbles and need to visit my grandparents to remind me what real Mexican food tastes like. If you are looking for good Mexican food then this is not the place for you...you're better off going to Taco Bell. However, if you in mood for tasteless so-called Mexican food you found the place!
I have been going to El Sombrero since I first heard of it working at Smart & Final in 2000, they shop with us frequently down town. I was very impressed with how fast you get your food right after ordering and it hot and fresh (not like its been sitting in a warming tray all day like with "fast food" feeling restraunts). Since then I have been frequenting El Sombrero at least every couple of weeks with my girl friends, my mother, and now my husband and baby girl (who loves the beans and cheese!) When I say you get fast service I mean it, on a lunch half hour I could drive from Smart & Final on Golden State & "F" Street to them, order, eat and get back in time, that's a rarity with a non-fast food restraunt. Two thumbs WAY up for this family owned and opperated restraunt!!!

If your palette is so unrefined that you can't identify homemade food when you taste it,I think someone of your kind should stick with places like Taco Bell...and if you're going to be writing reviews, you might want to brush up on your spelling!
Don't listen to this review. This place is my favorite Mexican place in Bakersfield. Whether it is "authentic" is a matter of opinion. I've had dishes that different people claim to be authentic and they vary greatly. All authentic means is what you are used to eating. The food is very good regardless. I would stick with ground beef tacos and cheese enchiladas. I've tried a lot on the menu and found they are the best. Their rice and beans are good too.
One of the best Mexican restaurants in Bakersfield!
